    Meridian Mobile announced the launch of 5 models of mobile phones under the brand name Fly, in the Indian market.

Meridian Mobile, a part of the UK-based Meridian Group has announced the launch of 5 models of mobile phones under the brand name Fly, in the Indian market. The company also plans to launch 15 new models by end of 2006.

Reportedly, the company has launched the Fly GSM phones in Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan and the eastern regions. The five new models are priced between Rs 8,490 and Rs 10,990. The company expects to sell about three million handsets globally, with India accounting for good numbers.

Commenting on the low priced phones, Rajiv Khanna, CEO, Meridian Mobile, said that the lower priced models of mobile phones will be launched in the Indian market shortly. There are planning to launch 1 or 2 models every month that will target the youth and customers in the replacement market.

Khanna added that the company has chosen Model/Actress Malaika Arora Khan as the brand ambassador in India. Around two million handsets are sold every month in India, out of which, about 70 per cent of the market comprise of entry-level handsets. Therefore, the company is targeting at consumers who are willing to spend about Rs 7,500 and above for a handset and this accounts for about 15 per cent of the overall market.

According to Meridian Mobile, Fly phones are presently available at 1,500 retail shops in India and they are aiming at 5,000 by the end of 2006. The company has tied up with retail chains like Pantaloon and Subhiksha for store in a store.

Also, the company is expecting 3-5 percent of market share in India and plans to invest around Rs 9 crores in marketing this year.
