Bharti Airtel has launched the fixed wireless phone (FWP) service, with a tariff of Rs 1.20 for a three-minute call to all local and intra-circle mobiles. The service, called "Airtel Mega", operates on the GSM network.
According to Bharti, Airtel Mega fulfills the customer's need for an innovative home phone service with the advantages of instant availability, feature-rich instruments, and mobility within the premises. The company says the service comes with the additional benefit of a unique after-sales service model.
Under Airtel Mega, a tariff of only 40 paise a minute will be charged for local as well as intra-circle (within a telecom circle) calls to any mobile, for both GSM and CDMA; while for fixed lines, the call charges will be Rs 1.20 a minute (60 seconds pulse).
Besides, there are several tariff plans under the new service wherein call charges can touch Re 1 a minute to fixed lines or mobile phones depending on the commitment. The STD charges would be Rs 2.40 per minute.
Airtel Mega is intended to bring value-ads to customers including Hello Tunes, SMS, Caller ID, etc. Other offerings of the service include free 150 minutes (50 pulses, 3 minutes pulse) of calling every month to one Airtel mobile/Airtel Landline, which is valid for a full year from the date of installation; free 50 local and national SMS in the first month of subscription; free Hello Tunes subscription in the first month, plus one Hello Tunes free; and lower entry cost for existing Airtel postpaid customers.
Speaking about the new service, Sanjay Kapoor, joint president - mobility, Bharti Airtel, said that the fixed line market in the country is currently under-served, especially in smaller towns and villages, largely on account of inadequate infrastructure. Through Airtel Mega, they intend to make available home phones to all customers within "arm's reach of desire."
The Mega service will be available under postpaid and prepaid, and will be rolled out across the entire Airtel wireless network.
