According to an industry review, PC sales in 2005-06 have registered a 32 percent rise over the last fiscal.
MAIT (Manufacturers Association of Information Technology), the apex body that represents the hardware, training, and R&D sectors of the Indian IT industry, has released its review of industry performance in the financial year 2005-06.
According to the review, the entire PC market comprising desktops and notebooks has grown by 32 percent over the last fiscal year, registering 5.04 million units. Desktop sales have crossed 4.6 million units, while notebooks sales have exceeded 0.43 million units.
Further, in 2005-06, desktop PC sales earned a revenue of Rs 8,884 crores, an 18 percent rise as compared to 2005. Whereas, notebooks earned a sales revenue of Rs 2,027 crores - an increase of 107 percent over the previous year.
Meanwhile, as per the review estimates, servers registered an increase of 69 percent, amounting to a revenue of Rs 1,545 crores.
Within PC sales, sales to the business segment improved by 33 percent and accounted for almost 75 percent of the total market. While PC sales to households too increased by 12 percent, but accounted for only 25 percent of total sales.
Another interesting revelation is that the proportion of assembled PCs reduced from 41 percent of total sales in 2004-05, to 37 percent in 2005-06. However, in absolute terms, they registered a growth of 14 percent.
Consumption of Indian brands increased from 24 percent in 2004-05 to 28 percent in 2005-06, thus registering a growth of 48 percent. Printer sales increased by 28 percent over the last fiscal, with sales of Dot-matrix printers having increased by 18 percent while those of Inkjet printers registering a 13 percent increase.
Last but not the least, the MAIT review reveals that the number of active internet subscribers increased to 4.12 million in March 2006, as compared to 3.12 million in March 2005.
