After the free rice offer, its time for some serious business!

According to reports, Infosys has committed to invest a whopping Rs 1,250 crores to expand its operations in Chennai, after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M Karunanidhi, visited the Infosys campus in Bangalore seeking more investments.

Karunanidhi, accompanied by Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, visited the headquarters of the Nasdaq-listed Infosys, and held discussions with the company's top officials.

Karunanidhi, while going all-out to woo IT majors to invest in Tamil Nadu, said that the government will announce a new policy for the IT industry after visiting captains of industry, so as to herald the kind of success that Bangalore has seen, and to generate jobs.

Karunanidhi stressed that the IT sector in Tamil Nadu would be developed in a manner similar to that of Karnataka, or even better, and that his government would make all efforts to achieve this.

Karunanidhi's assurances seem to have worked for soon-after, Infosys committed to invest Rs 1,250 crores, out of which Rs 350 crores are going to be invested by the end of 2006.

In a statement, T V Mohandas Pai, director - human resources, Infosys, said that the company's largest campus (125 acres), is coming up at Mahindra City in Chennai. Pai said that they have told the Tamil Nadu government that they will have 25,000 jobs in Mahindra City, in the next three to four years. Pai said that they already have around 3,500 people working there.

Further, it seems that while the focus is on replicating Bangalore's success, Tamil Nadu is also keen not to repeat Bangalore's mistakes. The state says it will be focusing equally on expanding into tier II and tier III cities, including Hosur, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, among others, with a view towards attracting more investments, especially from the IT sector.

Mumbai will get it's chance, after Infosys has invested in Sudan and Angola. When Mumbai can't get rid of it's filth and "anything chalta hai" attitude despite being highest contributor to national exchequer, how can you attract anyone to invest in dying Mumbai?

Both the Chief Minister and Mr.Maran deserve all kudos for the timely initiative. It is hertetening to note that Shri.M.K. was magnanimous to recognise the progress made by Bangalore and promised to do better in Tamilnadu instead of picking holes in the strides made by Bangalore such as inadequate infrasructure etc.

Very right in the decision taken by IT majors to expand to smaller satellite cities of Tamil nadu like, Coimbatore Madurai etc. Talking particlulary about Coimbatore, the civic administration should ensure that it starts providing better roads and other infrastructre well in advance so as woo these giants.

Nice to hear that major IT gaints are going to expand in city like Coimbatore where abundant manpower and good infrastructure already exists. Moreover the climate is also Conducive for setting up office here. And last but not the least the people here are self made and hard working.

Good move, IT Students in Tamil Nadu will be able to find jobs here itself; We already have good educational institutions and talented students and were lagging for want of job opportunitties. With the increase in demand in IT sector fields like Agri-IT, Medicine/Surgery-IT will also develop. Long Live our beloved Kalaingar and Dayanidhi Maran.
