Verizon has launched "Chaperone," its new location-based service that empowers parents with the ability to communicate with, and trace their children's whereabouts through the latter's Migo phones.

Verizon has also launched an educational Web site to explain the benefits of Chaperone, as also how best to use the service.

The Chaperone service is based on Global Positioning System (GPS) data, and according to Verizon, is designed to supplement established parent-child parameters with two options.

In the first option, the Chaperone Child Locator equips the child with a new or updated Migo phone, and the service is activated on the account. Parents can locate their child's Migo phone from a PC, through the Chaperone Web site.

Whereas in case of the second option that is the Chaperone with Child Zone, parents can construct an area called Child Zone around places their child typically frequents such as schools, playgrounds, etc. Different locations can be "zoned" for pre-determined times, so that when children equipped with Migo phones, arrive or leave at pre-determined times, parents are alerted via text messages on their Verizon Wireless phones.

The educational Web site, according to Verizon, is designed for parents, irrespective of whether they have purchased Chaperone or not. Using the four-segment video illustration of Zip and his family, the Web site teaches visitors how to set-up and use the Chaperone service. Apart from educational purposes the site re-enforces the importance of the family, and that of staying-connected.

Interestingly, there is also a "Chaperone Certificate of Rights and Responsibilities" to be downloaded and printed after viewing the video clip.

One Rhonda L Clements, professor - education, Manhattanville College, New York, who advised Verizon Wireless on the Chaperone Project said, "The video and other materials speak very effectively to children, and will play an important role in helping families get the most value out of the Chaperone service. Chaperone encourages independence, allowing children to be active outdoors and develop socially, while still enabling parents to have a link to connect with their children when they are out-of-sight."

While the Chaperone Child Locator can be added for a monthly access fee of $9.99, the Chaperone with Child Zone calls for a monthly access amount of $19.99. Both Chaperone Child Locator and Chaperone with Child Zone are available through Verizon's Wireless Communications Stores in the US.
