Nvidia Corp has announced its nForce 500-Series Media and Communications processors (MCPs), powered by Intel's Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme CPUs. The latest line-up comprises the 570 Ultra, the 570 SLI, and the 590 SLI processors.

Gerald Holzhammer, vice president - digital home group and general manager - consumer PC platform group, Intel, said, "The gaming community is very important to us. Our Intel Core 2 Duo processor will help establish a new level of performance for gamers, and we are excited that our customers will be able to obtain it on Nvidia SLI platforms."

According to Nvidia, the nForce 590 SLI processor is designed from the ground up, for enthusiasts by enthusiasts, and utilizes the power of up to one, two, or even four Nvidia GeForce GPUs for extreme high-definition gaming.

The nForce 590 SLI incorporates gaming-specific features including Nvidia's FirstPacet technology for optimized network gaming; and support for SLI-Ready memory that is touted as the industry's first core-logic solution taking advantage of the new Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP) memory specification. The nForce 590 SLI is said to support dual RAID 5 on a single controller, plus dual x16 electrical PCI Express slots.

All three new processors support a 1066MHz frontside bus clock, and DDR 2 SDRAM clocked at 667MHz. While the 590 SLI can support six SATA drives; the 570 processors can support four such drives. However, the 570 chipsets can handle more IDE units than the 590 SLI. All new processors can RAID up their SATA units, in 0, 1, 0+1, and 5 modes.

Dell's new XPS 700 gaming desktops will incorporate motherboards based on the nForce 500-Series processors. The new processors will be available, along with solutions from leading motherboard manufacturers, add-in card companies, and system builders such as ASUSTek, ECS, Gigabyte, XFX, EVGA, etc.
