Microsoft has unveiled Visual Studio Team Edition for Database Professionals, expanding the Visual Studio 2005 Team System.
This edition has different tools aimed at various participants in the software development process, including coders, testers, project managers, and architects who design systems.
Microsoft executives claim that the latest Team System product makes it easier for database administrators and programmers to make and test changes to database schemas, which are designs for the way that databases store information.
Microsoft says that with the new edition, Database professionals will be able to drive better quality, much earlier in the development process, through integrated database testing, including support for database unit tests, complex test authoring, and automatic generation of meaningful test data.
In a statement, S Somasegar, corporate vice president - developer division, Microsoft, said that their goal is to ensure that all members of the IT organization can gain more visibility into, and greater predictability of the software development process.
This addition to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System is being seen as the next milestone on the way to the release of Visual Studio, code-named "Orcas", which will provide capabilities for building compelling applications that target Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Windows Vista, the 2007 Microsoft Office system, and the next generation of Web technologies.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is creating ties between Visual Studio Team System and its Office Project application, so that high-level technology managers can check progress and analyze a company's entire portfolio of software projects.
The new product is scheduled for a preview release on June 12, at Microsoft's TechEd 2006 in Boston, and is expected to ship by the end of the year.
According to reports, the latest Team System will carry the same price tag as other Team Edition role-based versions, which list for $5,469. And customers that have purchased Microsoft's all-in-one Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite with update licensing will receive the new database developer software for free.
