Sun Microsystems India and NIIT have launched an initiative to expand the technology horizons of the country's large student population.

Sun Microsystems India and NIIT have launched an initiative to expand the technology horizons of the country's large student population, by introducing specialized education and training programs around Sun technologies.

It is intended that students emerging from these programs will add to the existing Java and Solaris developer communities in the country.

Through the alliance, NIIT will have access to the latest Sun technologies, tools, technical resources, and curricula on the Java and Solaris platforms. Sun will enable NIIT to offer a range of customized programs to a broad spectrum of students, through NIIT's widespread network of IT education centers.

The alliance claims to have offerings for both undergraduates as well as working professionals. For undergraduates, NIIT will integrate the latest generation of the Sun Java platform into the GNIIT curriculum; and GNIIT students will work with high-end visual development tools such as Java Studio Enterprise that focus on improving developer productivity and software quality.

For working professionals, the high-end Sun curriculum will be integrated into NIIT's CATS (Curriculum for Advanced Technology Studies) offerings. This will allow professionals to get access to training on the latest platforms and tools.

Speaking at the launch, Vijay Thadani, chief executive officer, NIIT, said that they are delighted to partner with Sun Microsystems. Thadani said that Sun's Java and Solaris are among the most revolutionary technologies in the industry today.

Bhaskar Pramanik, managing director, Sun, said that Sun has always been at the forefront of IT education, and that it is committed to the spread of Java and Solaris education in the country through the popular 'Authorized Sun Education Centre' program.

Pramanik said that NIIT is known for its pioneering work in the field of IT education and training, and that they are indeed happy to be associated with an institution that shares their deep-rooted commitment to furthering the cause of IT education in the country.

The initial launch will focus on the Sun Java platform, while Solaris will be addressed later this year.

i did not understand this .. sun products are almost all free downloads and there are numerous web sites providing free courses on sun products(programming languages). By joining Hands with NIIT what does SUN gain?... As many people can get their material downloaded from web sites.. I donot think people will join NIIT for this.
