Apple Computer and Nike have unveiled the first offering from their upcoming Nike + iPod line of products; the Nike + iPod Sports Kit.

Using a Nike + iPod Sports Kit, miniature versions of the iPod portable digital music players would be able to give on-demand audio data about time, distance, pace, and calories burnt via an attachable receiver that gets data from a sensor in the insole of specially made Nike shoes.

The wireless kit lets Nike's new Air Zoom Moire shoes send fitness data to the iPod Nano, through a sensor inside the running shoes plus a small receiver that attaches to the Nano.

From the Nano, such workout data can then be uploaded onto Apple s iTunes and the new nikeplus.com Website. Also, progress over time can be tracked and compared virtually with that of other runners.

However, since the iPod does not have wireless capabilities, users need to purchase this kit that includes a thumb-sized wireless transmitter connected to the charger interface of the music player. The transmitter is based on Bluetooth technology, and can also be used to support wireless headphones.

The iPod will also now incorporate a new "Power Song" feature, so that users can instantly queue up a piece of music for extra motivation at the push of a button.

In a statement, Steve Jobs, chief executive officer, Apple Computer, said that the two companies are both, really speaking, technology driven; and it s just that they are into completely different areas of technology. Adding to this, Mark Parker, chief executive, Nike, said that when they get together, ideas just flow

Apparently, the Nike + iPod Sports Kit, which will be available in two months time for around $29; has already won an endorsement from Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, who plans to run his first New York marathon later this year.
