Bharti Enterprises is gearing up to launch Airtel cellular services in major overseas markets, so said Sunil Mittal, chairman and founder of the $2.7 billion group.

Speaking at an event organized by the Ladies Study Group (LSG), Mittal said that Bharti Airtel (formerly Bharti Televentures) is now ready to go international, and that the company is looking at opportunities to acquire overseas cellular licenses so as to launch mobile services under the Airtel brand in key international telecom markets. Mittal however maintained that Bharti is yet to identify the specific countries where it intends to launch mobile services.

Nothing was said about whether Bharti Airtel would float a 100 percent overseas subsidiary, or would go in for an offshore joint venture with an international operating partner.

Amongst Bharti's existing foreign shareholding partners are UK-based Vodafone and Singapore-based SingTel.

Scotching all speculation about the possible exit of Bharti from the telcom sector under the tedious FDI regime introduced by the Manmohan Singh government, Mittal went on to set a super-duper $10 billion revenue target for the company, achievable over the next four years.

In a separate announcement Airtel introduced the "Disney Mobile Theatre" whereby Airtel customers can now enjoy Disney entertainment programs on their mobile phones, under the aegis of an agreement between the operator and Disney.

The new service will enable Airtel customers to access six animated Disney series of 30-seconds each that have been tailored specifically for mobile devices. Airtel subscribers will also be able to access Disney characters in the form of images, animations, videos, ring-tones, and games.
