Sun Microsystems India has announced the roll-out of the Sun Matching Grant Program, for the second time, in the country. This is part of its education grants and donations program. Through this initiative, Sun will provide a series of hardware, software, and web-based training material that will allow an unlimited number of Indian educational institutions and students to benefit from Sun's technology.
According to company sources, as part of the Matching Grant Program conducted last year, a record 45 educational institutions utilized the opportunity to build and enhance their educational and learning infrastructure to meet world-class standards.
The Sun Matching Grant Program is a co-investment program, whereby Sun donates equipment with a similar investment from the educational institution or partnering Aid organization. This unique program, which has been designed to provide impetus to the cause of education initiatives in the country, will now allow education institutions to purchase selected items at standard education prices and qualify for the second identical unit for free.
Mohan Doss, regional director - education and research, Sun Microsystems India (Asia South), said, "These hardware, software, and web-based training materials we are providing the colleges are for teaching purposes alone. They are development and application tools and can help the students to understand what they are learning. The roll-out of this program is a significant undertaking that will deliver benefits to the Indian student community as a whole by creating skilled technical professionals who contribute to the economy of the country. Sun embraces developing countries and continues to demonstrate its commitment to enabling technical skills capacity building through ongoing donations and grants to institutions responsible for the development of the future workforce."
"The Sun Matching Grant program complements our existing Edusoft and Sun Academic Initiative (SAI) programs. Through Edusoft Sun offers, to the select educational institutes, all our software at virtually no cost for teaching purposes and with SAI, Sun extends to approved institutes free access to course content on Java and Solaris. Sun is committed to helping the education community and to removing the cost barrier in making the latest equipment available to students, instructors and researchers," Doss said.
Also on offer is an academic discount on service parts to those who purchase SunSpectrum Instant Upgrade coverage on their selected hardware. SunSpectrum Instant Upgrade pricing is applicable to both the purchased hardware and the matching free hardware.
