Hewlett-Packard (HP) has reportedly instituted a world-wide recall for around 15,700 Compaq and HP notebook computer batteries, claiming these could pose a burn and fire hazard.
The recall is applicable to lithium-ion re-chargeable batteries that have been manufactured in early Jan 2005, and are being used with various HP and Compaq notebook computers. Apparently, the affected batteries have a bar code label starting with "L3".
So far twenty cases of overheating of batteries have been reported to HP, with two in the US and one - an instance of minor burn injury.
Around 4,100 of the total number of batteries recalled are from USA. While the batteries were manufactured in China, the computers were sold at retail and online stores in the US - at prices ranging between $1000 and $3000 from Jan 2005 through Dec 2005. Battery packs were also sold separately for anything between $100 to $300.
Computers that might contain batteries subject to the recall are: dv1xxx and ze2xxx from the HP Pavilion family; nx48xx from the HP Compaq series; and V2xxx and M2xxx from the Compaq Presario family.
Consumers are advised to visit www.hp.com/support/BatteryReplacement. A spokesperson for HP said that the company will provide free replacement batteries in place of affected batteries, and that consumers should send suspect batteries to HP.
Interestingly, this is the second time in less than six months that HP has issued a recall for flawed batteries.
