Microsoft to Sponsor WCG till 2008
Techtree News Staff, Apr 16, 2006 1743 hrs ISTWorld Cyber Games (WCG), the annual global game culture festival has appointed Microsoft Corp as its premier sponsor.
World Cyber Games (WCG), the annual global game culture festival operated by Korean company - International Cyber Marketing (ICM), has appointed Microsoft Corp as its premier sponsor, and announced that Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Games for Windows will sponsor WCG from 2006 through 2008 providing hardware, software and marketing support for the events. ICM, founded in 2000, is backed by Samsung Electronics which is the official worldwide sponsor for WCG.
As such all WCG events including the three pan-regional Championships, the Korean Championship, the US Championship and the Grand Finals scheduled to be held from October 18 to 22 at Monza in Italy, will have Microsoft as the premier sponsor.
As per terms of the deal, Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 will be the exclusive gaming platforms for PCs and consoles respectively, and Microsoft will be the provider of games, state-of-the-art consoles, Xbox Live online game service and peripheral equipment for all WCG events.
Hank Jeong, chief executive officer, International Cyber Marketing (ICM), said, "We are very happy to announce Microsoft's status as a premier sponsor of the WCG for the next three years. Microsoft's support for the WCG further validates the growing global popularity of e-Sports. Having Microsoft as a partner reinforces the WCG's position as a pioneer of competitive gaming, and as the premier event in global e-Sports."
Peter Moore, corporate vice president - interactive entertainment and devices division, Microsoft, said, "Over the years, we have admired the incredible growth of cybersports, and WCG's role in expanding the reach of these worldwide tournaments. Because of WCG's history as a truly global gaming competition, it was a logical choice to team up with them and extend the reach of these events even further."
The participating countries are slated to hold National Championships comprising online and offline preliminaries, starting this month. Interestingly, inspite of Microsoft's pre-eminent position vis- -vis WCG, "Project Gotham Racing 3" remains the single selected game from Microsoft s stable for WCG 2006.
