This montitor exudes the same class as its elder brother. Does it perform as well?

Excellent color reproduction and contrast, Classy and sleek, 8 ms response time, Auto Pivot support.

    Minor color registration issue, Expensive.

Remember the LG 19" LCD monitor we reviewed two weeks back? If you have read that review, you are going to find a lot of similarities between that and what's written in the few dozen lines that follow. Why? Because of the similarities in the products. If you take the LG L1980Q and reduce a couple of inches from the screen size and a few thousand rupees from the price tag, what you get is what we have for review today, the LG 1780Q.

Talking of similarities, it has the same sleek design with a black frame with metallic grey edges, a white piano finish at the back and the adjustable, round, lustrous stand on which the screen rests. The buttons that help you access the different functions of the LCD are located along the bottom edge of the monitor and respond to touch. You don't need to press them; simply touch to access that function and that applies to the power button as well, which is a semicircular transparent thing with a blue LED at the bottom right corner of the device. The connectors at the back include a D-Sub, a DVI input, and a power adapter input. The VGA cable, the DVI cable and the power adapter were bundled in the package.

The specifications of this display are a carbon copy of those of its 19" counterpart (except for the screen size of 17 inches). It has a response time of 8 ms which translates into better picture quality and minimal ghosting effect. The pixel pitch stays at 0.294 mm. It has a maximum brightness level of 250 cd/m" and a contrast ratio of 500:1. The horizontal and vertical view angles stand at 160 degrees each. It supports a maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024 at 32-bit color depth.

The Auto Pivot feature has been implemented in this model too. The screen can be rotated sideways and the picture adjusts accordingly. It can also flip backwards by almost 180 degrees and the matter on screen does a 180 degrees somersault. So you wish to show something to the person sitting behind your monitor, just flip it over and the monitor adjusts automatically. However you will need this software called LG Forte Manager installed on your PC which is bundled along with the monitor or can also be downloaded from the LG website. There is one thing I noticed; the phase shift in this monitor is a touch slower than the L1980Q. The Auto Pivot feature can also be disabled from the software.

Just look at the CONS: 21k, Only 500:1, and 8ms (Caps, Bold, and Italics). This is rediculous. For this cost, a good monitor would be: 600:1 (or better), 6ms.
