Microsoft Corporation has announced the Imagine Cup 2006, an annual contest held by Microsoft to help students from across the world showcase their software development skills. Imagine Cup is now in its fourth consecutive year.
The contest empowers students to apply their creativity, knowledge and technical abilities towards making the world a better place through technology, and encourages students to develop applications that are relevant in today's context. This year, the worldwide winners of the software design category stand to win US $25,000 (Rs. 12.5 lakhs approximately). Registrations for the software design category closes today the 15th Feb 2006.
Sheila Gulati, Director - Developer and Platform Evangelism, Microsoft India said, "To announce the commencement of registrations for Imagine Cup, we go to most of university and college campuses across the country and speak with students directly. In addition to this, we initiate several online promotions, which helps reach out to students in the remote parts of the country. During the last few years, Indian students have performed extremely well in this contest, due to which, the contest already has significant recall and has generated substantial excitement within the Indian student community."
Imagine Cup 2006 will include six categories such as, Software Design, IT, Algorithm, Gaming, Interface Designer and Short Film. Registrations for the contest are currently underway. The registrations for Software Design category closes on 15 February 2006, for the Interface Designer & Short Film categories on 1 March 2006 and for the other categories on 15 March 2006.
When asked about the criteria of selection and the required qualification of students, Gulati said, "Imagine Cup is open to college as well high school students (eleventh and twelfth class school students). The only requirement is that, these students should develop applications that adhere to the worldwide theme for the year. The contest is open to all students, whatever their educational background. However, for the short film category, it is advantageous if the students have a media background."
The theme for Imagine Cup 2006 is 'imagine a world where technology enables us to live healthier lives'. According to the company sources, Microsoft is encouraging students to leverage their skills to develop applications that address the healthcare issues facing the current day world. This is in keeping with the company's endeavor to create a platform that helps address emerging global challenges. Some interesting applications submitted by students last year included a GIS based solution for traffic management, presence based solutions etc.
When asked about the response so far Gulati said, "This year, India is hosting the worldwide finals of Imagine Cup. This is a proof that worldwide IT communities recognize that the next generation of IT innovation is going to be driven from India and that Indian talent is now recognized as top-of-the-line. Driven by the above, we hope to set new records in participation by Indian students in Microsoft Imagine Cup 2006. We are very excited about the level of interest we have seen from Indian students so far. The registrations for the software design category are due to close on Feb 15, 2006 and registrations this year have already exceeded the participation we saw last year."
The Imagine Cup 2006 India final will take place in April 2006 followed by the worldwide finals in Agra in August 2006. This is the first time that the worldwide finals are being held here and is strong testament to the country's emergence as the world's IT nation.
