Sony's Gen-Next Blu-ray discs are priced at 20 percent more than current prices of new DVDs.
Sony Pictures has announced pricing for its Gen-Next Blu-ray discs, that is indicative of a 20 percent increase over current prices with respect to new DVDs.
The company has announced that it will charge retail outlets a wholesale price of $23.45 per disc for premium/new titles including "Underworld: Evolution" etc; and $17.95 for catalogue titles such as "Hitch," "The Fifth Element" and "Species". Apparently the $23.45 price represents a 15-20 percent increase over current new-release DVDs.
Analysts express the view that while price hikes are common whilst introducing new standards, Sony's listed wholesale prices for Blu-ray are lower than expected. At a time when Blu-ray has its horns locked with rival HD DVD, analysts see the new pricing as an aggressive move by Sony to help Blu-ray win brownie points over HD DVD.
Camp HD DVD is yet to announce their pricing policy.
I searched the net but still Blue Ray Players for region -3 is a daydream. Why sony is ignoring this region. Surprisingly Sony Launched some Code Free Blue Ray Player, BDP S300 and BDP S500, but in specification it is mentioned only for Region 1 & 2. Why again region 3 is ignored. Is there anybody who can tell me the place from where I can buy region 3 capable Blue Ray player?
I want to by motherboard of my Soni TV. The model no of TV is KV 2185 GE. I want to know the cost of the motherboard and its availability in Punjab (India)
I will choose blu-ray over HD DVD, HD DVD is now old hat why would anyone want to buy something that is limited especially when there is an alternative. Blu-Ray for me is the future that is until they bring out the next format I understand that is disc burned using ultra violet lasers.
These prices doesn't give any information. What we need is the price for the recordable disk and the merits. Like the prices with some titles recorded are always sold at high prices in SuperStores across world, whic do not, in any way, reflect the recordable CDs and DVDs we used to buy. Probably this information is released to "hype" the thing.
I think the best approach for today is to wait and watch and hang on to your old DVD. Let the war be waged and battleline drawn and when we have a clear winner we will go the whole hog for it. Investing in something now will be foolish as there are enough chances of either of them becoming a flop.
I will not buy either system. They must be mad if they think consumers are going to buy two more players in order to enjoy all their favourite movies in HD. This means we will wind up with three different formats in our collections with Mr Average running out of imputs to plug the damn things in. Ridiculous. One more thing while I'm at it there are very few TV's out there that will accept a true 1080p input signal, not even Sony's latest SXRD TV's
I still believe that HD DVD will be the better format, SONY has a bad history when it comes to formates ( should I bringup the memory stick flop). I will stick to my standard DVDs and probally wont support either but I will not support Blu-Ray unless all other formates of video have been discontinued
Interesting, I heard the pricing for the blu-ray would be like $40. The Sony decreased the price a lot, I wonder how much profit are Sony making of the blu-ray.
Even the Rs. 7/- CD-Rs that you get has some Profit in it. So, Sony's pricing of the BD-ROM should be profitable by a decent margin...If I read it right, these prices are of "titles" and NOT the disks. Will be eager to see how the drives and disks will be priced. We will know the "format" winner within June or max by Dec this year.
