AOL, Yahoo to Charge for Emails

Techtree News Staff, Feb 06, 2006 1208 hrs IST

America Online (AOL) and Yahoo! have announced plans of charging fees for speedier email delivery.

    mail share

Now preferential services on the Net... Two of the largest e-mail providers - America Online (AOL) and Yahoo! have announced plans of charging fees for speedier email delivery.

AOL and Yahoo! say that they intend to introduce a system of "preferred e-mail," for companies that pay between 0.25 and 1 US cent for each message. Both AOL and Yahoo will continue to accept email from senders who do not pay for this preferential treatment; however the paid messages will be the ones to bypass spam filters and other barriers so as to land more quickly in users' in-boxes.

AOL is reportedly launching its premium delivery service in the next 2 months, through California-based Goodmail Systems. Yahoo has yet to enter into a formal arrangement for its proposed service.

While messages from subscribers of AOL's paid-for service will be delivered directly to AOL mailboxes, messages from senders who have not paid will be treated as suspicious and sent to a spam folder, unless the sender is already archived in the recipient's address book.

Yahoo! and AOL are hopeful that with this move, it will be easier to distinguish between legitimate e-mail and the rest of the clutter comprising spam, etc. Those who advocate "net neutrality", under which data is disseminated without discrimination of any kind, are of course against this development. Besides business analysts fear that in case speedy email delivery does not happen as promised, Yahoo! and AOL are likely to face the music.

If AOL charges for email then it's time to find another ISP. This will set the atage for broadband to reduce their charges and take over the market. Maybe it's time for the old to move aside and let progress take it's toll.

These young persons who had some experiences in working for such people either in their own individual capacities or as volunteers in some NGOs involved in similar activities. But, through such exposures and experiences came a realization that one?s own mission as also vision can be accomplished if only such activities could be undertaken independently. Thus was ?born? PAF. We, in PAF, believe in the saying that ?work is our sole identity?. In all our activities, honesty and transparency are our commitments. It is our vow to create a ?PAF Family? where true love would be the common bond for each and everyone of our children and elderly persons who have been marginalized in the society because of their destitution and abject poverty. PAF is in its infancy now. It has started its activities with 10 children in the age- group 3-8 years (6 are children of sex-workers and 4 are street children) and 2 aged persons at a remote village called Purokonda in Bankura district of West Bengal. A dwelling unit has been constructed on the land donated by the local Gouria Math and a tube-well has been sunk along with arrangements for minimum toilet/sanitary facilities. Plans are afoot to construct another dwelling unit so that more inmates can be accommodated. PAF has also decided to undertake a program to provide formal education to children of nearby ?dom? community( who were hitherto untouchables) by making them admitted to local school and bearing the expenses for their education. Other plans under active consideration include ? After-school assistance program for poor and less meritorious students of the near-by villages? and ?Running abridged course for drop-out children of the locality?. Till now, PAF is carrying on its activities entirely with donations from well-wishing individuals, and, as expectedly, this would have to continue for the near future as well. While we are making sincere efforts towards receiving some kind of institutional funding, we also appeal to all sympathetic individuals and/or organizations for financial help. We sincerely hope that you will be kind enough to extend a helping hand to our activities by sponsoring one or more of the following activities of PAF. (i) Educational sponsorship for one school-going child for one year Rs. 2000 or US $ 50 (ii) Sponsoring one child for one year Rs. 12,000 or US $ 300 (iii) Sponsoring an aged person for one year Rs. 12,000 or US $ 300 (iv) Sponsoring a pre-primary educational centre Rs. 6,000 or US $ 150 (v) Sponsoring book ?bank for school books Rs. 3,000 or US $ 75 (vi) Sponsoring an after-school assistance program /abridged course for drop-outs Rs. 2,000 or US $ 50 (vii) Sponsoring a vocational training program for a group of 20 women Rs. 2,000 or US $ 50 CONTRACT FORM FOR SPONSORSHIP I would like to sponsor one or more of the PAF activities (please tick the appropriate one(s) above) viz., item no(s). If the emails of spammers who send thousands if emails at one time are sent straight to the spam box, I am in favour.

As they also send all legitimate mail (from new users, i.e. a friend that changed email address) to your spam box, you will have to actually read these thousands of spam messages to find the false positivs. So, this will just make you read MORE spam!

Most people pay for ISP service, which in most cases include e-mail. Even so, with so many other companies offering free e-mail, why would you pay if you don't need to? "requires application of time and technology. " - No one required them to. If they want, they can charge. Let's see how well that goes for them. I'm thinking not very well at all. So now, spammers can just pay the dues and go straight to your in-box. This is better how?

As much as I hate SPAM .. I think this is hogwash and just another way to make money. What if I want to recieve e-mail form companeis I gave out my address to. Why should they have to pay ? Why not start implementing some kind of architecture for Caller ID Infrastructure and require that the companies have a "Caller ID" enabled email so they can be verified (As has been proposed by Microsoft and others in order to reduce spam).
Prasad
,Bombay, on Feb 06, 2006 03:31 PM
Now do I have to pay each service provider seperately? Or is it like a postage stamp, where I pay once and it gets to whatever destination I want it to? If the former this is FURTHER splintering the service!!
*** spam
,wesminter, on Feb 06, 2006 03:19 PM
This would reduce spam somewhat but not all, because companies whose send out million email a day would have to pay for it and they won't want to do that for revenues sake. End user benefit because they get their email fast and it isn't much send they don't get that much email per month.

bad Idea, too easy for spammers and business to flood inboxes with ads and unwanted e-mails just because they bought a electronic stamp with no guarntee that the e-mailer isn't a fake address. AOL and Yahoo have just opened the flood gates for spammers weakening the internet rather then tightening the net against spammers, this is the one time I hope the government steps in and shuts this idea down. Only choice now is to place AOL and Yahoo domains in my rejected list. Just to protect my inbox from spammer floods and business flloods for e-mails i didn't request. Just making the time consuming spam filtering even harder.

Just another way to extort money from the public.... If they really were serious about the spam problem, they would put in place a system similar to Caller ID. But this is not a priority because it won't make them more money immediately like this stupid pay-per-email scheme!!! AOL is already one of the biggest ripoffs going and this just makes it worse!!!

You are all a bunch od dumb *****. They are not charging for you to have an email account. They are charging companies that want to send you spam for not being included in filters. Read carefully before you cheap ******** start whining about having to pay.

I don't think that is fair, because I have had my email address for years, and that will be a problem with me, I wouldn't have a way of paying, there should be some solution for users thats been faithful, I use this to keep in touch with my family back in the US, I am from the Pacific islands, I got this email address before I could even us a computer, I was just a new user

I do not think this is in the best interests of email users, as it seems they are providing a legitimate way for "spammers" to bypass the filter system. If someone wants to receive email from a company, they can currently unblock that sender themselves.

Great idea to sort our emails, however, having unpaid messages of users delivered to spam folder is unacceptable. I think this idea will generate in the short term some cash for both companies, but in the long run will turn users find email services else where: Gmail of Google.

Listen guys. This is a trick they are doing. Once they get enough "fools" to start paying for their "special email scheme", then they will start charging everyone for basic email and then guess what - we are all going to be the fools. Don't let this happen, people should put their foot down and fight for their rights. We pay for internet service and FREE EMAIL is included with it!
