This dictionary is very comprehensive, as I was able to lookup meaning for some really strange and complicated words. As a spell checker, I was able to obtain the proper spelling for quite a few errors as well. For misspelled words, it prompted me with a few nearest suggestions picked up directly from its in-built dictionary. Unfortunately, the application doesn't correct or suggest spelling corrections automatically to words typed in other applications such as Notepad, unless, of course, you manually invoke WordWeb, in which case it also lets you replace the words automatically. More on that later.

There are other useful features that one can find in its Options menu - few of these are to be enabled according to the user's choice. Besides displaying pronunciations, usage examples, it also offers lookup for vulgar and offensive words. I'll let you to explore this feature for yourself, though!

The other interesting feature is its direct linking to Microsoft Word. This feature can let you lookup for a word and replace it with the alternative results to choose from. This is made possible by the function "Replace" found on the lowermost right hand corner of its visible pane. This feature replaces the selected word at a single click, in-turn saving you from a manual copy-paste task.

Free vs. Pro
WordWeb is currently being offered in two different editions, free and pro. However, a list of stuff that one can avail in the pro version includes 6000 more definitions, a wildcard search pattern, ability to add your own words and definitions to its database, building and using custom glossaries, adding your own web references, full text definition search, copying words and definitions to the clipboard, finding/solving anagrams and viewing/deleting the list of words previously looked up. All of these extra features cost US$19. But if these are not of your priority, then sticking to the free version is the best bet! Actually, there is not much of a difference that one would miss in the free version over the pro one, if all you're looking for is something to correct your spelling and help you learn a few new words in the process.
Final Verdict
WordWeb is a solid all purpose dictionary and thesaurus which is easy to use and quite light on resources. You don't have to grab a hard bound dictionary and go through a rigorous MS Word thesaurus lookup anymore. WordWeb is a very useful tool for writers, students or the ones looking to build up their vocabulary. It also comes in handy for the ones who are trying to improve their fledging English. This freeware according to us is a gem of all applications and certainly gets a high recommendation right away. Check it out here!
