Are you in search of a dictionary but are unaware of any other than the one which comes integrated within applications like OpenOffice or Microsoft Office? Wondering if there is an application that makes it possible to look up words and their synonyms from almost any program? Well then your hunt stops right here.

WordWeb?
WordWeb is a comprehensive English thesaurus and dictionary, which can be used to look up words from within most programs with a simple hotkey command or manual feed. It features definitions, synonyms, proper nouns, related words, pronunciations, a total of 140,000 root words and 115,000 synonym sets. WordWeb comes pre-installed with these sets of features and is made available for offline use (no Internet required). And to top it all, it's being offered as freeware!
Operation
After installation, this little utility resides in your system tray, waiting for you to enter a word to be looked up for. By default WordWeb sets the hotkey to the key combinations "Ctrl + Alt + W", but there many other applications that use various key commands similar to this combination. Hence to avoid any interference, I change the hotkey command to "Ctrl + ~" (tilde), which is not only easy to access but also an uncommon key combination which can hardly interfere with any other applications. Looking up a word using this hotkey feature adds more to the convenience - simply highlight the word you want to lookup in any application like your web browser, chat client, or any other application that has selectable text, and hit the hotkey combination, WordWeb will then pop-up its window showing the relevant information with many more details. The application needs the word(s) to be in selectable text format, not in pictures, as WordWeb lacks any OCR (optical character recognition) capabilities like Babylon.

It then offers a definition along with the synonyms, attributes, the different types, for the word you look up for. You not only get the spelling of the word, but the meanings dealing with every category for that word such as nouns and verbs as well.
