In the tradition of cashing in on popular game franchises, Hollywood has created many a disasters, that have made gamers literally weep after watching their favourite games turn to meaningless rubbish. Being an extremely popular video game franchise, it was only a matter of time before a Doom movie was made.

The movie that opened world wide last week has received a lot of flack, but at the same time has managed to convince a select few that this is the best game-to-movie adaptation till date.

The movie loosely follows the plot of the original Doom game, which has Demons invading a research facility on Mars. The research being carried out at the Olduvai station has inadvertently opened a portal to hell and it's most unfriendly minions. Since this situation qualifies as a level 5 quarantine, the Rapid Response Tactical Squad is called in to make sure nothing gets out alive.

The movie is directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak (Cradle to the Grave) and stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Sarge, Karl "Eomer" Urban as Reaper (last name Grim) and Rosamund Pike as Samantha Grimm, Reaper's sister and a resident scientist aboard the Olduvai station, who finds out certain horrifying truths about genetic experiments and human chromosomes.

The movie was initially slated to be a PG rated movie, but thankfully producers understood how violent the game is and decided to go with a no-holds barred R rating. The climax is filmed from a First Person point of view, to try and create a sense of total immersion.

Taking the phrase "Counting your chickens before they hatch" to a new level, actors Karl urban and Rosamund Pike have already signed on for a sequel, which is surprising, since the movie hasn t made box office history yet.

The Rock doesn't share the same enthusiasm as his peers, and isn't sure he'll be on board for the sequel, which could be called Quake, because this is Hollywood, a place where originality is as rare as Caviar in Somalia.

The movie, like the game, has a generic story but with one baffling difference. Instead of demons spewing from a hellish portal intent on exterminating everything in their path, we are introduced to genetically mutated humans/animals as a convenient excuse to wreck havoc in UAC, Mars. The moment I heard this little omission, I knew the very essence of the game is destroyed. Yeah, I know, it's Doom, but really what's the fun if it can't even replicate the thin storyline that the original had? Why create the same generic story in the name of Doom that one has not seen in other films like Resident Evil, Hulk, Aliens 4 etc ? Trust Hollywood to not see the similarity. But hey, if you do like movies that are just plain hard action, then Doom might actually work for you. Otherwise, give this a pass.
