The Indian market recently experienced an onslaught of off-beat looking mice from Microsoft's hardware stables all targeted at mid- to high-end audiences: The Optical Egg by Starck, the Wireless Optical Mouse and Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer range with about 20 different colors and designs, the cute wireless Notebook Optical Mouse... I've had it with Microsoft's mice naming conventions. While the basic segment has been catered to with the Basic Optical Mouse and the non-optical Wheel Mouse, there's another one, which has been overlooked quite often: the Wheel Mouse Optical.

The Wheel Mouse Optical uses the new IntelliEye 3.0 sensor found on the higher-end IntelliMouse range (priced at Rs. 1,500 and above), that scans the surface 6,000 times a second, as opposed to the Basic Optical Mouse that uses an older sensor scanning between 1,500-2,000 times. The end result is anyone's guess - far more precise pointing and smooth operation. Entry-level gamers should stand up from their seats and take notice: this mouse can help you play better!
The rest of the features are not too different from the Basic model. The design is ambidextrous - both left-handed and right-handed users can use it with equal comfort. It has two buttons, three if you count the scroll wheel, which, by the way, does NOT feature the new Tilt technology that lets you scroll sideways as well. The mouse has a USB interface and comes with a USB to PS/2 converter as well.
The Basic Optical Mouse retails for about Rs. 650, the lower entry-level Wheel Mouse (non-optical) for about Rs. 300 and this Wheel Mouse Optical for about Rs. 850. For only Rs. 200 more than the Basic variant, you get a mouse that's smoother and more precise to handle. As an eye-candy element, you get a nice red glow from the derriere of the mouse that indicates that the mouse is getting its cheese!
We would even go as far as to say that this is the best mouse your money can buy at this price.
