NIIT Technologies has announced that it would offer Geographic Information Systems (GIS) services to its clients globally. The decision to include GIS services as part of NIIT Technologies' offerings was announced at Nasscom 2004.
NIIT, through its subsidiary ESRI India, a strategic alliance between global leader ESRI Inc., USA and NIIT, has been offering complete solutions around GIS technology to various government departments, private sector corporations, and educational and research institutions in India since 1994, a company statement has said.
GIS is a computer-based system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating and displaying locationally-defined data. GIS is used for digital map making, site selection, finding the best route, solving environmental problems, exploration of natural resources, urban planning and solutions for other problems.
The entire GIS industry world-over has been estimated at 7 million USD, of which the US accounts for 2.5 billion USD. But it has been increasingly observed that the GIS in India has increasingly evolved with software. It has also been proving useful in critical projects including environment, forestry, land records, and utilities.
The facility is to come up at Himachal Pradesh. In India, ESRI's clientele includes the Department of Space, National Informatics Centre, State Forest Departments, the Survey of India, and the Geological Survey of India.
