ATI, the graphic solution manufacturer, has seen an immense growth in the gaming market in the country and has seen a wider reach of its products after entering the market here.

The company has recently announced the setting up of the largest research & development center outside North America, in Hyderabad. This center will develop next generation chips for a variety of platforms. ATI is investing heavily in this space largely in terms of software development tools and training. It is also sponsoring scholarship programs for students who intend to become VLSI engineers, in close association with VEDA IIT in Hyderabad.

Speaking about the companies' growth, Sven Rathjen, sales director, central and emerging markets, ATI Technologies, said, "Phenomenal, especially considering we started almost from scratch in India. Two of our products are doing very well, the Radeon X850 and Radeon Express 200/RS480 motherboards with onboard graphics compatible with DirectX 9.0."

"We believe we are in a dominant position in the market with Socket 939 mobo with AMD 939 CPU sales for the last 3 months. 'Best buy' reviews have helped us in that segment. In the 754 socket segment too, we are replicating our success. On the graphics front, we've got major success in the PCI Express segment with X300, X600, X700, X800, X850 series," said Rathjen.

"Before we came into India, availability of ATI based products was a problem. We've made significant strides in that area and are today much more closer to our consumer. We've observed that most new purchases have been for ATI based products. LAN parlors run ATI based computers. That has given a first hand feel of ATI based products to gamers who are opting for the same at their homes," said Rathjen.

The company claims to support many gaming tournaments in the country and also plans to start its own gaming event soon. ATI also plans on launching the Crossfire R520 in September this year.

"Consumers have also become much more graphics aware. One can easily understand gaming enthusiasm when one compares the response to gaming tournaments today vis-a-vis a year ago. Gaming being such an immersive entertainment option has started to gain a lot of traction. Over the year, the number of gaming parlors itself have probably doubled," said Rathjen.

Rathjen also said, "Most youngsters are increasingly turning to gaming as a preferred recreation. A lot of them also want to turn pro. We've noticed even girls visibly participating in tournaments, something that was not known earlier. A lot of young, energetic Rubys in India showing up on the scene."

ATI is gonna decimate the mid-range gamer's piggy-bank. If they expect a rise in sales, they can also expect a rise in bank robberies across the country. but like they say, something's gotta give.

Yeah in the Channel, because nobody is interested in X700 and X800 and 6600GT and 6800GT are hot favourites(SLI ready). God when these people behave accordingly. ATIs CrossFire is still missing and nVidia is going over the top with more then a million NF4-SLI Chipset for AMD A64 sold. What ATI people are talking about??? Also G71 (7800Ultra??) leaked story tells us a highly tweaked 800MHZ (core speed) part from nVidia (a dual Slot Cooling) coming after 520 so it is going to be an up-hill climb for ATI anyways. No matter how good ATI 520(600MHZ for starters) will be. To make things worse nVidia has 7800GTX shipping in quantities. Where as X700 was not to be found even 3 months after the launch. People Talk Sense. X700 or X800XL, the thing is what you pay for SM3 or SM2b.... i know it doesnt make much diff today but official support is good for future games. ATI, GET YOUR ACT TOGATHER!!

For a causal gamer, the options from ATI and nVidia are truly staggering. However, I don't necessarily agree with Sales Director Sven Rathjen stating that ATI is selling like hot cakes. For one, nVidia's NV43 is still the most feature rich chipset available. ATI does not have Shader Model 3.0 and SLI capability yet. We can point out ATI's cross-fire feature as an argument, but the motherboard support is still very poor. Right now, ATI is only 'answering' nVidia rather than setting a trend like it did with its 9000 series. nVidia, after the FX debacle has risen like a phoenix with its 6000 series and it has never looked back. Until the R520 comes out, ATI's products are really taking a beating. I had an ATI rage for nearly 3 years and it worked wonderful with the latest stuff. But now, things aren't the for ATI in an industry where 6 month delay is like a lifetime. The middle segment has been run over by 6600GT (which I personally have and love it) and the 6800GT, the high end is being cornered by 6800GT(SLI). Now the ultra high end is being virtually unchallenged with the 7800GTX blowing away ATI hopes of making amends. And they still can't find a way to bring in Shader Model 3.0 !. ATI has some road to cover. It shouldn't just sit on its short lived success in India. But I'm sure they will come up with a fitting answer.....

True. A 6600GT and X800 costs similar outside, but here the X800 is 1.5 times the price of a 6600GT. The RS480M2-IL is a very good motherboard, however. No wonder it is getting so popular.

I wouldnt say so...ATI are usually wayy ahead of their times...look at the X850 XTPE for example.... 512 MB ... thats massive ... and compare a 6800 GT to an X800 XL....the X800 XL is cheaper ... only the 6600GT is cheaper from Nvidia in India... other ATI cards like 9550 and 9600pro ..offer the best in class performance. Nvidia doesnt have anything decent in that range .. and dont tell me that an FX5200 is a decent card!!!! if you say so.. then you havent tried the 9550.

1st and da last thing is that ati x800xl 256mb pci ex card in avail. at da cost of 17400/-. Now the price is much lesser than 6800gt 256mb but its beating 6800gt in lots of gamez benchmarking...and its now competiting against 6800 ultra. ya ya he cant beat 6800 ultra but this card is much better than da 6800gt and if u buy this card from asus or pure ati it cost bit high but perfor. more better. I was a nvidia fan but when price and performance comz we have 2 choze..and im standing with ati now.u guyz dont beleve me then go 2 some gud benchmarkin sitez and c ya self..
