Google launched a Video Viewer as part of a Web-based video search service which DVD Jon cracked in a day.
Google's Video Viewer lets people use keywords to search its indexed database of videos from numerous suppliers, including ZDNet parent company CNET Networks.
Users could play back files that were stored on Google's server but Jon Johansen, also known as DVD Jon posted a code, which requires a .Net runtime to work to remove that restriction.
In a statement, Google confirmed Johansen's Video Viewer tweak. The company noted that the code was not a hack and did not in any way compromise Google's video viewer.
Google is advising people not to install DVD Jon's software on top of Video Viewer. The company said in a statement that it could result in security vulnerabilities on their computer and may disrupt their computer's ability to access Google Video.
Johansen, aka "DVD Jon," is famous in the Linux community because his DVD decryption software permitted Linux users to run DVDs on their PCs. His software also cracked the CSS (Content Scrambling System) copy protection mechanism that DVDs use.
wow, you guys are on the ball...there are only 30 other news channels reporting the exact same info, and it's not even completely correct. Jon didn't "crack" anything, but thanks for the misleading headline to draw readers in. Suckered me I guess.
