East Central Railway and North Central Railway, both subsidiaries of Indian Railways have signed a contract with Siemens to build mobile rail communication networks on the basis of GSM-Railway (GSM-R) technology in the country.

Within the context of the new projects, over the next twelve months Siemens Communications will be installing the complete network infrastructure for building the GSM-R networks in India and supplying all components required for operation: Switches, base stations, service and administration platforms, as well as mobile handsets for the train engineers.

In addition, Siemens will also be supplying its railway@vantage solution, which contains specific rail applications like Location Dependent Addressing (LDA) and Functional Addressing. For example, by pressing a single key the train engineer will be able to automatically contact the control center at the nearest station via his GSM-R mobile handset, without having to dial its discrete number.

The contracts for the two projects are valued at some six million euros.

These new contracts will strengthen our position as world market leader in GSM-R, said Christoph Caselitz, President of Mobile Networks at Siemens Communications.

India is one of the fastest-growing mobile communication markets. This and the importance of rail traffic make India one of the world s most important markets for rail communication. Indian Railways decided to go with Siemens because of our wealth of experience in this region and because we are the leader in GSM-R technology.

One of the world s largest railroads, Indian Railways operates a rail network of some 63,000 kilometers in length and 14,000 trains, which carry over a million tons of freight and more than 14 million passengers a day.

By gradually equipping its main lines with GSM-R over the course of the coming years, Indian Railways intends to enhance the safety, security and reliability of its rail traffic. This technology, which is based upon the international GSM mobile communication standard, will help to integrate the voice and data applications required for rail communication into a single system.

If I remember correctly - it was Motorola whose core team comprised of Indian Engineers who set up the Railway Networking System for New Zealand - surprising that we still have to go to Siemens for a solution when I am sure the system could have been made workable with an Indian Company! Of course Siemens have an excellant track record, and if allowed to implement the system, it would bring down the number of accidents in our accident prone railway system

Actually the technology dosent exist in India. Example cell site handovers would have to be supported at speeds over 400 Km which GSm-R supports now.

Its good that finally GSM-R is slowly creeping into IR. The next level of modern signalling, ERTMS L2, should also find its way soon. Good for the Indian ppl as a whole.

This is a very sensible move, should have been started much earlier, but never the less, at least it is on now. All speedy success to this venture.

Its good thing. But can we expect internet connection in railways.? Also GSM-R technology details if u can post will be interesting. Because on one side we r saying that Bharti and BSNL have already started on 3G .. so can we use their services since they have operating Licences in almost all circles (almost 96%) All in all its a good initative . Cheers!!
