Former employees of Mphasis have been arrested for robbing $350,000 from Citibank accounts based in the USA.

The latest scam has caused a stir in the booming outsourcing business. The police said that the investigations into the Rs 1.5 crore cyber crime have revealed a fake ration card from the prime accused, Ivan Samuel Thomas.

The former Mphasis staff dealing with Citibank's customers tricked four of them into giving out the PIN numbers to their accounts, allowing the staff to transfer funds into the bank accounts of other 'gang' members.

Sanjay Jadhav, ACP, has told the court Thomas's e-mail password had been changed after his arrest on April 6, leading them to suspect others were involved as well.

The police said that Stephen Daniel, one of the accused was a Defense Research and Development Organization employee and they were probing his possible involvement in other cases.

The police also revealed that an additional $75,000 was also withdrawn from the US citizens' Citibank accounts. Public prosecutor D.T. Sonar told the court that the police had been able to recover Rs 13 lakh from the accused.

The Judicial Magistrate has extended the police custody of Ivan Thomas, Ginny Thomas George, Nitin Madhav Valkar, Vijay More, Saundraj Ramanujam and Satish Madhukar Parab till April 19 to check their involvement.

Are you some kind of Sadist or some frustrated freak... do you know how many crimes you have commited since birth, the only difference is you were not caught. Think before you say anything - they are humans.

Strange logic from our friends here. What basically we are saying here is not that the perpetrators should be severly punished for their crime but because it gives a bad name to BPO in India. Are we saying it is OK to rob a bank electronically here in India, but don't use your BPO garnered info to rob Americans?

These sort of things happen in the US call centers too, the only big deal is they are never published or criticised.. which is a shame. I know of cases in ireland and UK aswell where UK based call center exec.'s took out money and went on a shopping spree. but its INdia that always gets blamed ...

When the american citizens are against to the BPO, we indians should avoid doing these illegal activities. They should understand, it gives more employment opportunity to many graduates, which was not before. These activities will give upper hand to those who are against to Outsourcing. Govt of India should find a way to control look for these silly behaviour. They can develop a network, which should restrict using the credit cards from our Internet port.

IT security is non existent in india. the lazy babu's at the police station can't catch criminals on foot let alone crime at the speed of light.
