Brace yourself for a 20% to 30% increase in your mobile phone bills this year, as all leading operators are set to raise call tariffs in order to improve revenues and cut losses. This comes at a time when service providers have been paying penalties for various kinds of violations that runs into crores of rupees.

Vodafone has apparently set the ball rolling with a 20% raise in PostPaid tariffs from January for Delhi users. The hike will soon extend to other regions as well. Vodafone Director Samaresh Parida blames the government, stating that the company is left with no choice in the face of mounting costs. The hike will not spare users with prepaid connections either. However, these plans will be affected only after March.

Other operators are likely to follow suit soon. Having said that, consumers will be better informed this time around, as TRAI has already asked operators to publish tariff plans in newspapers. After many directives issued by the TRAI to ensure better services, this news will certainly dampen the mobile phone users' enthusiasm.

Why dont we all switch to skype or some messengers on our phone. We can use the cheap 2G internet & avoid these expensive operators.

Companies such as Airtel are already making tons of money by activating unnecessary services without the consent of the user.......i don't see the need to raise tariff again.... But as a consumer I would like a transparent plan(even if it is costly) as compared to seeing my hard-earned money go down the drain with such unnecessary activations :(
