One look at the specs and you can't be blamed for thinking that DataWind's first generation Aaskash tablet is destined to be a no-show. It now seems that the curtains may be pulled down on the country's cheapest tablet soon! Reports suggest that the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) is in no mood to extend the letter of credit (LC) to the company. The LC expires by the end of this month. The Government, however, will not do away with the tablets just yet, as it plans to sell these devices in rural areas.

DataWind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli however, claims that the tablet is on track and is in the process of being improved. He says, "There is no indication that the project will be shelved, and there s no credence to these sensationalist stories. There is no 'news' there. The Aakash tablet has met and exceeded all the specifications, features and criteria specified, and the product s quality has been confirmed by both national and international labs".

The HRD ministry had initially asked DataWind to produce one lakh units and has already sold 30,000 of them. The 7" Android 2.2 tablet is powered by a 366 MHz processor. Armed with two USB ports and a multimedia player, the device offers 180 minutes of battery life.

Kamakshi, do you want akash to go down by using this title or you want to capitalize on akash's popularity to increase the hits on your topic by saying it may go down? The content of the article very clearly says that there is no possibility or intention of bringing down akash. This is the first initiative from government and also making the product affordable to everyone when all so called MNC are sucking the blood of its customers by selling the products for 15-20 times the actual cost. Try supporting such initiative instead of propagating false information and panic. People who just read you title may assume it is set for sun setting! Hope this article is not with vested interest with some ulterior motive!

Yes... totally agreed. These so called intellectual editors or writers don’t seem to have brains. They take a sip of tea or rum and starts writing down rubbish articles. They should study 50 to 70 years rigorously about journalism. How poor workers they are!!!

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/aakash-low-cost-india-tablet-kapil-sibal/1/168564.html I know pretty well that the link is given. But there is no need to redirect the users writing some news item to such. Wht difference is there now between the half -cooked news items given in the link and the item on TT except adding some masala!?!?

<<One look at the specs and you can't be blamed for thinking that DataWind's first generation Aaskash tablet is destined to be a no-show>> Do the TT team think that the readers appreciate such comments on a tech site? Please note that your readers are not LKG students!! Given a chance with subsidiary please explain your specs for a Rs. 2500 tablet. Most importantly isn't the article self-contradicting?? The title and the biline says the project is shelved - and yet again the same news item says, <<He says, "There is no indication that the project will be shelved, and there s no credence to these sensationalist stories. There is no 'news' there.>> Please remember that people had already stopped believing print and visual media for their half-cooked stories. I hope the same won't happen to the Indian tech sites.
