Rockstar
Running Time: 2 hours, 25 minutes
Director: Imtiaz Ali
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Nargis Fakhri, Shammi Kapoor

You might have not heard of Imtiaz Ali's directorial debut Socha Na Tha. However, most of us have at least heard of his two subsequent films - Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal. His latest Bollywood flick features Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri in the lead roles. I was invited to a screening by Dolby Labs and so decided to check it out. No, it's not a science fiction film as one of the writers from TechTree thought.

The story revolves around a middle-class college student named Janardhan Jakhar (Ranbir Kapoor), who aims to become a world-renowned rock star. He is convinced that great art necessarily comes from pain and thus seeks a source of "inspiration". This comes in the form of a fellow college student, the "unattainable" Heer Kaul (Nargis Fakhri). As the story unfolds, we see Janardhan transform into Jordan - the Rock Star

Thoughts
First things first; Imitiaz Ali does a good job with the progression of the movie, and keeps the audience engaged most of the time, providing the kind of role Ranbir is perfect for. His performance is exceptional, but the same cannot be said of debutante Nargis Fakhri, who has a sub-par on screen persona.

Movie Review: Rockstar

The first half of the movie has been rendered beautifully and engrosses you in the transition of Janardhan into his celebrity status. Unfortunately, the second half falls short of the expectations set for it. It deals with his frustration at the price of fame, and his continued separation from the love of his life. However, it goes about this in a very slow-paced manner, making it feel like the emotional scenes were purposely stretched to fill the screen time. Also, the way the movie concluded left me wondering as it was a little too open-ended - something you don't normally expect from mainstream Bollywood movie.

With AR Rahman in charge of the soundtrack, expectations are naturally high, and it doesn't disappoint. The song Saadda Haq is energetic, while Naadaan Parindey and the Sufi-insipired Kun Faya Kun are also worth listening to several times over.

Verdict
Despite its shortcomings, Rockstar is a decent movie and certainly counts as a paisa vasool experience. Despite being marketed as a mainstream blockbuster, it veers significantly from the usual Bollywood tripe. Overall, it comes across as an entertaining watch that might call for a repeat viewing as and when it hits TV screens.

Plot: 2.5/5
Performances: 3/5
Visuals: 3/5
Sound: 4/5
Mojo: 3.5/5

Overall: 3/5

So now we get movie reviews on a tech-website?! Shame how it lost its stand on being one of the most popular Indian tech-sites to being just a free-falling MOR. The dilution of the quality in the content doesn't speak too highly of what was once my fav. tech-site in India. Where did those amazing tid-bits, those superbly written reviews, the crafty guides etc disappear from here? And come to read this, the author even goes on to sacrilege it further by noting it as 'from a Techie's perspective'. You lost my interest here, TechTree. Sorely disappointed!

I like the review from a techie! It's short and crisp. Unlike any other bollywood site doing a dissection review this one is to the point and serves the purpose. With so much little time in our daily lives it is easy to read this kind of a review and get the feeling of the matter. @Ajinkya: why can't there be a film review from a techie or on a techie site? At the end of the day they are also human beings and not a gadget! Sharp work Rizwan Memon!

Hey Abhiroop... I have no issues of a techie doing a movie review nor do I deny the fact that they too are humans... But the place they are doin it is odd... people come to this site wanting to read tech articles... no harm done... I am still a TT fan and will keep on comin back here... I want to see TT in very professional way... keepin it to the point and serving the site's purpose.... :)

<<review from a techie's perspective>>I'm sensing some defensive attitude in that :). Just felt the review should have been bit more free in length. It's appearing as if it was written in hurry/fear/uninterested.
