    India Bans Popular Filesharing Websites

RapidShare, Megaupload and others blocked by the Department of Telecom.

    mail share

Update: Apparently, Reliance BIG Pictures is behind this fiasco. The ADAG subsidiary obtained a cease and desist order from the Delhi High Court to prevent the piracy of its upcoming movie Singham. The scope includes cable operators and CD \ DVD pirates, while also expanding to cover the internet. Reliance then served notices to all ISPs, requiring them ensure the prevention of piracy of the film through their networks. The ISPs seem to have played safe and issued a blanket ban on filesharing websites altogether.

Last night, many Indian internet users were shocked to find their favourite filesharing websites banned. Members of the India Broadband Forum reported that visiting popular websites such as Megaupload, RapidShare, MediaFire, DepositFiles, and many others served up a static page saying that the "site has been blocked as per instructions from the Department of Telecom". This ban was reported by subscribers of major ISPs, including Reliance, MTNL, and Airtel.

News: India Bans Popular Filesharing Websites

There has been no official announcement from either the ISPs or the Department of Telecom (DoT) on the ban. I encountered the same static page with MTNL and Airtel when I tried accessing the filesharing websites earlier in the day. Interestingly, various filesharing portals have been banned and unbanned intermittently since last night across different ISPs. As of this writing, I found both MTNL and Airtel to have lifted the ban. However, there is no saying if and when then ban will recur.

Although users can bypass the ban with proxies (by enabling Opera Turbo in the Opera browser, for example), it's still ridiculous for the DoT to infringe upon users' rights. Forums are abuzz with various conspiracy theories, including one that cites Bollywood lobbying for the ban under the pretext of piracy. Whatever may the the excuse, the government has no business banning an entire service altogether just because it's being misused by some. This is just as daft as deploying thermonuclear warheads to cure polio. Hopefully, these websites will continue to remain operational.

Certain ISPs have lifted the ban. They may ban it again later if they are asked to.. So the sites may be available intermittently ..

As if their loot of the public exchequer (and thereby the Indian taxpayer) in the pretext of oil prospecting and exploration was not enough, Reliance is trying to (unfairly) influence the policy makers to further their business interests, in this case, to effect a blanket ban on file-sharing websites. Screw these people!

May be its possible to list down all the successful movies released after Broadband in India, but why the Reliance is thinking that a Good movie wont be successful due to Piracy. As an example just take the case of latest Hit "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara " and "Ready" even if all these piracy is their still these movies, in my city are running with houseful boards. Again reliance proved How they will use their money power to challenge the democracy of this country.

internet is supposed to be totally free in all the aspects . All the isps will suffer a loss in the internet using subscriptions. If it was done for Singham maybe it will be over soon else if it has been done by the DOT then the isps will eventually have very less net users. But still no one has that right to block particular site and that too without notice.

This move is uncalled for and totally unjustified. They those who make such decisions are fools, coz any moron surfing the internet knows how to get by such blocks. What purpose did the blocks serve? Have they lost their mind? I read a comment somewhere saying block the internet totally, i mean this is seriously the biggest joke and for heavens sake, who the hell is reliance to decide the fate of those visiting those sites? I understand they have the rights to the movie but they cannot dictate terms to any1. All i can say is insane...for a shite movie.

Im using Reliance Broadband but got a solution to it... Download ULTRASURF from http://www.ultrareach.com/download_en.htm ...either for IE or Mozilla.......if u download it for IE it will work in Chrome too... if you are using IDM or any other download manager....then make sure u disable it for Google Chrome, mozilla,IE or any other browser u r using....Google chrome(and other browsers) should download those files using its default downloader.....after all this open mediafire(and other banned sites) link...and download....and stay happy.....

This is a blatant infringements of our rights, they cannot censor websites just because some big shot company pulls strings for them. Boycott Singham!

The UPA Govt. should show this type of pro-activeness in fighting corruption, terrorism, and bringing back black money, instead of issuing a blanket ban on file-sharing sites under pressure from Reliance. BTW the torrent sites are all working fine where bulk of piracy occurs.

Internet should be free. Once again the government has proved that it is a mock upon itself. It should better concentrate upon other serious matters than applying blanket ban upon websites. Better help in developing better antipiracy techniques rather than applying ban.

Communist flag is appropriate and there is nothing stupid about this article. Democracy and freedom has no place in a Communist countries - it is called "dictatorship of the proletariat". Comunist parties in India are an anachronism because ideologically communist parties are opposed to democracy.

Why not ban the Internet and ban all production of dvd player, tv , lcd screens, computers, smart phones, memory cards that may be used to spread or watch pirated movies so that the public will watch the movie only in the theaters. free speech and net neutrality are being made a target for vested interests.

And how does that communist flag connect with the article? Don't make political connotations if you don't know much of politics. I am still able to open mediafire and rapidshare websites, maybe coz i use google dns. It's a stupid move by govt. nonetheless.

Update: So blaming the govt. was premature. They are not in the frame at all. ADAG does't has many options left if they got cease and desist order from HC. Shouldn't you update your title too, ADAG is not equal to India or govt of India.

Why cant the govt take action on every city market flooded with pirated movies? Looks like currupt BABUS & piracy business is on decline as people prefer to download movies than buying on pirated stuff on road.
