Augmented reality is on everyone's wish list, thanks to movies such as Robocop and The Terminator. It is very much used by the US military, but sadly there is hardly anything to amuse us civilians.

Vuzix is set to change this scenario with the launch of its STAR 1200 augmented reality system. According to the manufacturer, the gadget's see-through technology allows you to see the real world directly, free from video processing lag or a limited field of view. The device, similar to sunglasses in design, is capable of augmenting 2D or stereoscopic 3D graphics to overlay a hologram. If that doesn't give you an exact idea, take a look at the image below.

The device can be connected to the PC through a VGA control box. It also has a DVI adapter. It is capable of producing videos with 1280x768 pixels, and is fully compatible with Windows. Given below are the minimum system requirements:
* 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 2 GB RAM
* 200 MB hard drive space
* USB 2.0 port
* 1 Mbps upload speed or higher

Priced at $4999, it is nowhere near affordable, but certainly a step in the right direction. Maybe in a year or two, we will get to see some reasonably-priced augmented reality devices (especially from China). However, if you're sold to the idea, head over to Vuzix's website to pre-order this cutting edge piece of technology.
