The iPhone 4 was launched way back in June in the U.S followed by other countries. But India has been one country among others that hadn't gotten the iPhone 4 love. Of course the iPhone 3G and 3GS are being sold even today. But Apple had remained tight-lipped about the launch of the iPhone 4 in India. Well, all that will be changing soon with Indian network operator Aircelannouncing plans to launch the device in Indian markets starting from May 27th.
Director of Aircel, Mr. Sandip Das said, "We are very proud to bring iPhone 4 to Aircel customers in India. We always endeavour to bring to our consumers a world class experience and offer the best in innovation and service. With a robust roll out of Aircel' s 3G services in 13 circles across India, the launch of iPhone 4 will allow our consumers to truly savour the 3G experience. With our incredible new price plans, we aim to make iPhone more affordable than ever."
It is very frustrating that our country is getting the handset so late when other countries around the world are anticipating its successor's arrival. However, it is commendable that Aircel is bringing the device to the country, but we fear if it may be a little too late. And here's the big surprise, the 16 GB model of the iPhone 4 will start from a whopping Rs.34,500, while the 32 GB model will cost Rs.40,900. I wonder as to how a person can call this affordable. But I guess that's how Aircel likes to market the new device. The handset will be up for grabs from this Friday at select Aircel retail outlets.
The Postpaid plans are as follows:
And now for the Prepaid plans:
We're not really sure as to how people would respond to this new arrival in the Indian market. My personal belief is that these two models of the iPhone 4 are obscenely overpriced, what do you think?
There are 800 million mobile users in India spending a total of about $22 billion on cell phones and services. In the United States, There are 300 million mobile users in the United States spending a total of $180 billion on cell phones and services. Indian cell phone services are cheap...not expensive.Stop whining about the cost of the iphone. If you don't like the price, why don't you make your own technology instead of relying on the USA for everything. Don't forget...most of the technology that Apple is using such as the internet and GPS are technologies funded by the American taxpayer and given to countries like India for free. You seem to forget that you did not pay a dime for the technology research and development nor are you subsidizing Apple's cost of doing business in the US which is of course done so by the American taxpayer, not the Indian taxpayer.
But Bill the one thing you are forgetting is that the technology you are talking about is more often than not being helped by indian engineers in the u.s.For any argument look at the number of indian engineers working in the silicon valley.Do you know who co founded "Sun Microsystems" and you won't find any Fortune 500 company in the world where indians do not play a leading role,Who was the ex ceo of us airways,ex managing director of mckinsey and countless other examples which if told would take pages.I hope you understand.....
oh bill cut the crap...
Do u thiink u dumb americans are at the forefront of software technology...Definitely not....Indians in some or other way contribute to the majority of techonology in this world. It has been happening since the dawn of civilization and is continuing till now. Now the point is indians never graced the credit for the most of the discoveries.
Btw wat do u mean by taxpayers money? Do u think apple is giving away the iphone at throwaway prices? The price in india is ridiculously high. Its infact the reverse of wat u said. we are paying more money than u and u r enjoyin the phone at subsidised prices. Remember every dog has its own day.. Greece was one of the mightiest empire in the world once. wat hap now?
Chi...the technology is not being created/invented by Indian scientists/engineers. The innovations are the result of American ingenuity. Indians had nothing to do with the creation of the Internet and GPS just to highlight to prominent technologies used by companies like Apple. The Internet and GPS are based on Research and Development that has taken place over many many decades.
vedanath: by taxpayer money he means the US taxpayers has funded technologies like GPS and Internet just to name a few that Apple uses. Apple also is getting taxbreaks funded by Americans for one of their data centers in the US. These things are not being funded by you Indian taxpayers. What did you not understand about his point? You think India created the GPS and Internet? You think Indians paid for the research and development of those technologies? Wake up and smell the Coffee
Why should Apple offer their products and services to Indians for lower prices even though he has already proved to you that owning the iphone 4 is much cheaper in India than it is in the US once you factor in the cost of the service which is the only reason it is offered for $199 because their cell phones are so expensive that the Apple and the carriers recover the cost as well make more money from the transaction.
bill: i think you're a new born kid into the market. If not, you'll not be uttering this.
NB: Microsoft will be closed without INDIANS. Hope this one point may burn your bulb, if not, *******
Yes, IPHONE 4 is absolutely obscenely overpriced. I don’t understand why Apple is charging so much for a phone which is already outdated in the market and cannot even think of competing with other major brands with hell lot of options and amazing spec sheet.
Ok let me get this right,
1) I have to pay the full cost of of the phone upfront
2) I have to pay a monthly rental ~1200(incl of taxes) on which i'll be discounted 720(a min)
Assuming i don't exceed the monthly allowance, why don't I just pay the difference?
3) I get ONLY 350MB of 3G data?
Think it'll also be helpful if you can put up what can be done with 350MB of data?
In case of postpaid plans, how much amount will customer pay per month? Customer will pay (Monthly rental minus subsidy amount). There is a new bill format being created for Apple customers, which will clearly bring out the 3 elements- monthly rental, monthly pay back amount and net rental. This will help customer see the benefit upfront in the invoice.
As per aircel website FAQ
Yes you are getting a great deal. As stated by others, you are getting the iPhone 4 with service for a two year period for less than $1000. AT&T will cost you at least $1900 and that is only for 200 MB of data, 450 minutes (outgoing and incoming) Incoming is not free like India and 200 SMS per month. SMS are expensive so in the US you have to buy an SMS pack because otehrwise they are 20 cents while in India you can get SMS for a lousy Rupee.
Reading the comments here explains why India is so far behind the rest of the world. They are more concerned about the iphone4 than they are with the fact that 25% of their population lives in abject poverty. Also, where are their priorites? They have dirt cheap healthcare and dirt cheap education. They have plenty of money left over from savings on those things to buy an iphone4. Americans spend 2.5 trillion USD on healthcare while Indians spend a paltry 72 billion USD on the same. India is home to $2000 open heart surgeries whereas in the USA it is 100,000 USD. Wow. talk about priorities...
"That's some sharp comment there billy! All Apple products are manufactured in Chinese sweat shops, why doesn't Apple manufacture it in USA?"
Oh...you have not heard about the cost of labor in the USA? There is a reason why things are made in China or services outsourced to India. Dirt cheap labor in those countries.
Also, ask yourself where the brainwork is performed? It is in the USA. Steve Jobs..the beloved Apple CEO and his former partner and the real brains of Apple Steve Wozniak are as American as Apple pie.
Vedanth...it is you who needs to cut the crap. American technology such as the Internet and GPS are not just software related..they are hardware relates as well. Also, the brains behind these innovations are Americans...not Indians. You cannot name the Indian scientists involved with the creative part because there were none. names like Leonard Kelinrock and Vincent Cerf were behind the Internet.
Read the post by Anonymous in LA and re-read my orgional post. Facts are facts and numbers are facts. The total cost of ownership (TCO) of the iphone is dirt cheap in India. I noticed you were not able to counter these points with numbers..just brainless shouting.
Subsidized by who? The American cell phone users are paying for the carrier's cost of the iphone plus profits for Apple by way of high priced two year cell phone contracts. In India, you Aircel is offering monthly discounts to offset the cost of the iphone as well. But, not matter how you look at it, the TCO of owning the iphone 4 in India is well below $1000 over a two year period whereas in the United States it is over $2000.
Under what rationale have you concluded that in India you are paying more for the iphone 4 or any cell phone for that matter? Your cellphone industry subscriber revenues are only 22 billion USD while in the US it is 180 billion USD and that too the USA has 500 million fewer users (we are a smaller country remember?) The USA is one of the three most expensive cell phone markets in the world.
In India, you are not paying more money for the iphone4 except in the upfront cost and that is because your cell phone service is so dirt cheap that there exists no business model to recover the carrier's full cost as well as make additional revenues for Apple. Apple has to make what it can from the upfront sale of the phone.
And, even if Apple were to sell its products cheaper in the USA it should because it is we the American taxpayer who has paid for most of the technology that Apple is using (such as the Internet and GPS) along with other innovations that Apple took from Xerox that were funded by taxpayers. Furthermore, Apple receives tax breaks which are funded by Americans for some of its infratsructure. You Indians are not spending a dime on subsidizing Apple's cost of doing business so why should Apple offer you lower prices? iTunes sales in India? What a joke...American entertainment content which Apple sells is primarily purchased by Americans...not Indians.
Airtel and Aircel can advertise, IPhone 4 is available for 1 month ROI. i.e
One Month rental = 69000 and Discount = 34500 for 16 GB.[you get your money in 1 month]. The monthly rentals given as 2000 and above are really high. We can buy better plans individually. [Vodofone 3G 500MB - 375 pm.]
They make us to buy IP4 for 35 K, and loot monthly also grab our money monthly !
Buyers Beware.
To all friends here, pls let me clarify on: Do I have to pay the cost of the device ie Rs 34,500 in advance? Afterward for each month do I have to pay (monthly rental-discounts)? Do the device is locked to Airtel/cel permanently ? Can I use another companies sim after 2 yrs ? Pls help.
Its certainly not overpriced since we had expected the price to be around 40k+. The main problems will be - the phone would b locked to Aircel, plans are not as attractive & Aircel doesn't have a good network.
If Vodafone/ Airtel/ Loop had launched the iPhone 4, it would have been a different ball game altogether.
I would rather wait for iPhone 5 to launch.
The iphone in India is dirt cheap. You people always forget to take into account your dirt cheap cell phone service cost. Total cost of ownership for the iphone 4in India is less than $1000 USD. In the US with Att or Verizon, the Total Cost of ownership is at least $1900 for two years and that too you get fewer minutes, less data and less SMS. ATT cheapest plans for the iphone is almost $1900 for the phoen and service and with that you get 450 minutes (outgoing and incoming) while Aircel gives you more than 1200 and that is just for outgoing since incoming is free. Even if it isn't free anymore, still better. You get 350 MB of data while ATT gives you 200MB of data for the lowest tier plan. Aircel is giving 500 SMS while ATT for the cheapest plan is giving 200 SMS. If you wanted the same plan with ATT as you get with Aircel, ATT iphone cost will blow past $2000 for the two year period.Verizon already is well past $2000.
he/she is absolutely right. my bro pays money for even incoming sms and calls in US if they are from outside network/state! besides he pays about 50 cents per minute per call. thats about 25 rupees!!! apple recovers the cost of the iPhone post sales through contact with service providers which have high call and data rate. the service in india is already very cheap. so its not possible to have that business model here. thus the $700 upfront…
besides, only apple can give the world class service it gives. my iPhone 3g was replaced after 2 years of use (thanks to croma warranty) without a single penny, because it developed dead pixels. they simply replaced the piece. no repairing crap.
It will be still a dream to have a IPhone.. It doesn't suit to our Indian Market.. We can buy a cheaper alternatives, which have much more facilities and features at lower cost.
these are not overpriced.. unlocked 32Gb version currently cost 35-37k in UAE/Singapore. Its only priced 3K more by the operators.
Aircell has offered an discount on monthly plans , lets see what airtel offers.
Very over priced, a dual core Samsung Galaxy S2 is larger, thinner, and has better hardware overall, and flash support, and it is coming next week at a cheaper price. It also has much better reviews than the iphone 4. Also it works on the best mobile OS on the planet, Android. In the US, the phones price would be half or 1/3rd of the original price and the rest covered by contrract. Here we need to shell out an extra amount other than the price of an old phone. There is absolutely no point.
