Continuing our Evil Twins series, we now jump onto a slightly different category of products. Every electronic product will always have a competitor that is placed in the similar price segment and offers the same features as well making very difficult to decide between the two. We thought, why limit ourselves to the just mobile phones so here we have our first Graphics card edition of evil twins. We've covered some of these cards in our recent guides which you can read here and here. Today, we'll be comparing the features and performance of both the cards and tell you which one we would pick if given a choice.
Nvidia GTS 450 vs AMD HD 5770
We start off with two mainstream cards, the GTS 450 and the HD 5770. Out of these two, we pick the GTS 450 for its overall solid performance and most importantly, its low power draw when idle. Let's face it, most of the time our graphics cards sit idle since we are surfing the net, listening to music or watching a video. It's only when we fire up a game that the card draws that extra power from the PCIE connector. Thus, when buying a graphics card, it's important to consider the idle power consumption of the card as well. A stock GTS 450 may be a bit slower than the HD 5770 but the good part is that it overclocks well and after that, it leaves the HD 5770 behind. We also found the DX11 performance to be better as compared to the HD 5770.
AMD HD 6850 vs Nvidia GTX 460 1GB
This was a very interesting fight as up until the last revision of Catalyst drivers, the GTX 460 was clearly the better choice at around 11.5K. However, quite recently, the price of the AMD counterpart has dropped to just under 10K (you can find it for 9.8K in Lamington) and coupled with the performance jump from the new drivers, it's suddenly the most sought after card in that price range. At stock speeds, both the cards are very similar with just a couple of FPS difference here and there depending on the game. AMD's offering though, is a much better overclocker and also seems to scale better in crossfire as compared to an SLI setup of the GTX 460. Nvidia needs to drop the price of the GTX 460 1GB soon and also somehow bump up the performance of the card with newer drivers. Another feather in AMD's hat is the low power consumption on idle.
