Uses front facing camera of smartphone and tablets to detect user gestures
Microsoft is certainly on cloud nine after selling 10 million Kinect sensors for Xbox 360 game console. On top of that, the company also announced that it will bring support for Kinect Sensor on Windows PC as well. While, on the other hand, we have XTR3D who promises similar controller-free gaming experience on mobile devices as well. This is enabled via an Android app called iZi that uses the front facing camera of the device for detecting user gestures. So you won't have to touch your Android based touchscreen smartphones or tablets for the controls.
XTR3D will be offering Gesture Control Software interface that will allow mobile devices with front camera to detect the gestures of the user and enable an interactive game play experience. The XTR3D Motion Capture Engine is a software-based engine for full body 3D motion capture and doesn't need any extra hardware. Obviously, your Android smartphone needs to have a front facing camera to detect and process your gestures. The iZi App would turn out to be amazing enabler of gaming experience with Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb based tablets with a bigger screen.
According to XTR3D, their software based motion capture engine is compatible with any game or applications without any modifications to be made. XTR3D, which stands for Extreme Reality 3D, did show off the apps demo at the Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona last month. As of now there's no word on when the iZi app will be released for Android smartphones and tablets.
Kinect certainly has introduced controller-free and gesture based gaming which is currently applied to game consoles and will soon be made available for computers. For modern day touchscreen smartphones, users still need to rely on touch based gestures like tap and swipe to enjoy games. The concept of using a front facing camera can be applicable to smartphones, tablets, laptops and even PCs with standard cameras. The next major thing for gaming is undoubtedly gesture-based gameplay for mobile devices.
