UPDATE (20-Jan-2012): To apply for online registrations from Amritsar, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Delhi, Kolkata, Madurai, Trichy, and Vizag, visit this website.

The world has become really small these days and going to a foreign country is no longer a big deal. There are many reasons to go abroad such as for a job, education or for a much needed vacation. But to be able to go abroad, the most basic document required is a valid international passport. Getting a passport always appears to be a hassle, but it won't anymore. We will show you the quickest way to get your passport by applying online.

1. Fill the passport application form
Before you start, please note that this online passport registration service is currently available for a select number of cities listed here, but will eventually be expanding to include more. The first step is to fill the online passport application form. Click here to open the form and fill in the required details. Most of the information is really straightforward to fill and does not require any assistance.

You will be asked to verify your details, press OK. Now save and print this form.

You can also download the PDF passport application form in English from here and in Hindi from here. You can also download and fill up a Personal Particulars Form from here if it is needed for police verification. You can then submit the printout directly in the respective passport office or DPCs or Speed post centers.

"In case you were born on or after 01.26.89, only Birth Certificate issued by the Municipal Authority or the Office of the Registrar of Births & Deaths is acceptable." I am born after this date, and I don't have this particular birth certificate, and the govt is not issuing any new ones 10 years after you were born. Any clues on how to get out of this situation? Does getting a Verification Certificate from the eligible authority helps in by passing this shit situation?

The main problem in India is about the address proof. They accept only MTNL/BSNL proofs, not private operators even if it is a landline. And if one does not have a ration card, one can not get the other docs like voter's ID. Hope the "aadhaar" project solves this but until then, there are lots of hassles including bribes to policemen and issues with people who are on rent and therefore moving around India.

The passport website mentions that we don't need to stand in a long queue, but when I applied for my passport online 2 months ago (Kolkata), I found that it's actually not so. There were two queues, one for online form submission and other for offline... and both were of comparable length. Also the time they mention at website for form submission is of no value... I'd suggest to go to Passport office on the given date as soon as it opens, to avoid failing submission of form, as they would not accept any more forms after their duty time is over. This is what I experienced at Kolkata, don't know about other cities though.

Strange, I never had to go to Passport office for submission, I submitted at GPO and 3 months and a Police verification later the passport was delivered to my Home. Absolutely "No queue"... I guess I am in India only and that too done via Bhopal passport offc...

Worked really well for me here in Bangalore. Had to spend a few hours one afternoon after online submission, really painless.

This is really easy and I have been using the facility for getting my passport renewed and also a new one for my wife. Things to note 1. It is much easier to apply for a new passport through the post office since you will have ZERO queues. Remember to take a DD favoring the passport officer since they will not accept cash. 2. It does not mean that you do not have to wait in a queue even if you apply online. eg: the queue at the Trivandrum passport office starts as early as 5 AM !! and by the time the office opens, the queue would have as many as 400-500 applicants who have applied online. A token is given as per the order in the queue and not as per the time given in the application form.- This might be different for different passport offices - so do check them beforehand.

5 am for the queue, and you are worried? Here in Hyderabad, people start lining up at 5 pm on the previous day.

All of the earlier comments have been spot on regarding the fact that you still have to wait in the queue, so I'd like like to just add 1 point. I recently renewed my passport (making it my 3rd passport), but I actually found the waiting time to be more as compared to my earlier experiences when there was no system of on-line application (maybe you can blame that on an ever increasing population!). So all said and done the on-line system is only eyewash!!!

First thing First. How to apply all knows. but how to deal with corrupt Passport officer few knows. First they created problem while form submitting, then they police person ask bribe at the time of police verification. they made a rule that pay 1000 bucks to process your file further etc., Can we see a protest in India too as going in middle east against the corrupt government?

The Statement "The benefit of filling the online form is that you do not have to wait in a long queue." is all crap... :P No matter what time are you given you have to stand in the end of line plus you missed the major role Local Police Verification... which can and will take GOD knows how many days until given Chai-Paani

"Online Applications" are meant to be SUBMITTED online. This is a worthless and half-baked attempt by the Government to show off that they are "into" the thick of things by coming up with only a "modern" replacement" of the same old printed passport form.

The passport maybe for the Republic of India, but there are no uniform laws for the public. The passport office in Hyderabad doesnt respect the time or date printed, and you have to stand for around 12 hours in the line (that means overnight of course) to get the passport. So Jayesh, you need to correct yourself, the quickest way to get a passport is perhaps to throw a wad of cash, and see the entire process dance to your tune. Why do it 'on-line' if you can do it 'on-demand' ?

Can you write a article about how to get a Passport without Bribing? Guess it's impossible in India. Police verification means be ready to shell out Rs.200 - 600 depending on your city / locality & your upbringing

Very useful article but be warned, you will have to stnad in the queue for documents verification as well as it will take some time inside the office as well where the documents are submitted. Filling the form online helps in a way since you will already have all your documents ready so there will be less probability of your request being rejected. Also for police verification, when the policeman comes, usually they say you have to pay some amount to show your 'gratitude' but in my case I did not pay anything and it was just fine...

This will not help you get passport quickly. It will just reduce the waiting time in a queue. I have tried with this site and all it helped me was get a token number to avoid the long queue. The passport process is still same old lousy process with a mandatory step of bribing the local police officer. If you don't bribe, be prepared for the worst. It is one genuine "Police Personnel Welfare Scheme" run by the government, whereby policemen earn upto INR 500 for each endorsement.
