Gear up for the holiday season

Holiday season is fast approaching and we realize our trigger happy readers are aching to gear up for the upcoming onslaught of eye candy rich games. 2011 is shaping up to be a really good year for PC games with Bulletstorm and Dead Space 2 taking charge; we have other great titles like Crysis 2, R.A.G.E, NFS Shift 2 to look forward to. While these games won't be too difficult to run even on modest systems since all the games are multi-platform, choosing the right card will make all the difference in the overall gaming experience. Looking at the market, we've noticed some companies have really aggressive pricing compared to others, for instance for AMD cards, Sapphire and MSI offer you the lowest rates and for Nvidia, we have ZOTAC and MSI again. It's sad to see other companies like Asus and XFX come up with absurd pricing which makes you wonder how they manage to make any profit in India. Even though their cards are of good quality and all, at times, the premium is just too high which makes no sense in investing that kind of money.

Today, we'll be taking a look at some great deals that we've managed to find under Rs. 10,000. While we all want fancy expensive cards, the reality is we don't really need them especially if you game on anything lower than a full HD resolution. We all saw that Crysis 2 is easily playable on a 9600GT on "Gamer" settings up to 1920x1080 so going by that alone, the cards we've picked today will easily handle all the upcoming games unless of course we get some shitty console port, then it's hardly our fault. One more thing before we get started, the list is made based on Mumbai prices so if you find a better deal elsewhere, holler in the comments section as it could help others in your city.

Under Rs.3,000 - Stick to Onboard
If you're on a budget that's anything under 3K then it's advisable you don't buy anything. I'd say work a bit harder and jump straight to our second category. The problem is that there isn't any worthy card at all under this price bracket that would give you playable frame rates. The cards under 3K are designed for HTPC use which means they are slightly better than onboard graphics, enough to offload 1080p videos and provide a wide array of multichannel audio options via HDMI.

Under Rs.5000 - Sapphire HD 5670 512MB/1GB
Our under 5K still remains the HD 5670. Sapphires offering come with a nice cooler and a larger fan for better and more silent cooling. Here you can buy either the 512MB or the 1GB version as the price difference is a couple of hundred bucks. The extra video RAM is nice to have although it's not needed much. The 1GB version is available for Rs.4,700 while the 512MB can be bought for a little less for Rs.4,400.

Under Rs. 6000 - MSI N250GTS-2D512 512MB
Yes, the G92 chip is still going strong and for a smidge under 6K, it's currently the best buy. MSI has shed the reference cooler and gone for something bolder using their own custom heatsink. The GTS 250 is built using 55nm fabrication and is the second coming of the 9800GTX+. It has the full 128 shaders of the G92 core and comes with faster clock speeds. The 9800GT is also selling for around the same price and we strongly advise you to stay away from it as it has the crippled G92 core same as the 8800GT. There's also the HD 4850 for those who are interested in an AMD solution but we'd stick to the GTS 250.

Roydon, I just sold my kidney for Rs 48,990. Can you please suggest me a graphics card and PSU that fits within the budget. My wife and kids were exchanged for a Core i5 760, an Asus P55 chipset mobo and 4 GB of ram.

the 6850 does beat the gtx 460 in terms of price and performance ! coz it is a 2nd gen dx 11 card!! but wen u compare to 550 ti ! no fucking way!! but in terms of price i wud say 6850 is better!! just put an extra 2 k u can get 6870 which is cleary equal to gtx 560 ! (not the gtx 560 ti)!! btw consoles suck!!! console fanboy can stfu! red ring of death on the xbox ! ps3 overpriced ! blue rays are costly!! i better stick with my pc!! and consoles dont have stable fps all the time! Just how can u say Gts 450 is better than HD 5770 , its faster than 5750 but a full 20% slower than 5770 . See web sites like toms hardware, tech powerup etc See this link http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/296?vs=316

@Roydon: GTS 450 doesn't perform faster than a HD5770. The card that performs equal (or slightly better) than 5770 is the newly released GTX 550Ti.
Roydon
,Techtree, on Mar 16, 2011 05:40 PM
The GTX 550 Ti is quite a bit faster than the GTS 450 and HD 5770 but at the current pricing which is between 9-10K, it doesn't make any sense when you can get the HD 6850 for a little more. I would only make sense to buy the GTX 550 Ti when it drops below 8K. And like I said, the GTS 450 and the HD 5770's performance is almost identical but due to the lower idle power consumption, we've picked the GTS 450. Plus it's a bit cheaper as well.

lol dude do some research before whining here!! 6950 equals the gtx 560 ti ! even though the 560 is slightly overpriced! maybe the gtx 560 could be a bit equal!! the gtx 560 ti is a different version

which dumbo says 6850 beats the 460?? Maybe the 6870 beats the GTX460 but surely not the 6850... and dont compare the SE or 768MB version of 460; i'm talking about the 1GB standard version.. and get the MSI CYCLONE GTX460 - 1GB /OC edition, its about Rs.10500 and overclocks way better than any 6850...

just an opnion: if u have 10 k why not by a xbox 360 by adding 3 k more and play games made for consoles and PC . wid a 10 k g cards u also require a good rig to run games at good fps which will easily cost 30k an upwards. Also these cards will be outdatted after 1 yr and a card with half the price and same preformance will be available in 2 yrs. and after 3-5 yrs ur whole rig will be outdated. As for Xbox 360 microsoft has no plans to bring in its successor untill 2015.

,ahmedabad, on Mar 29, 2011 07:45 PM
yes, u r right in yr way but keep in mind that u have to pay around 2.5k or even more for good xbox game while u can buy pc game at cheap rate or even "free" on net. so in long term gaming pc is way cheaper than console.

6850 does not beat a 460 1GB. Get your facts right. An oc'd 460 goes neck and neck with an oc'd 6870. check RELIABLE websites like Guru3d, tomshardware for benchmarks.

Why the hell would Roydon check Tommy Hardware or 3D Guruji for benchmark when he benches cards at the TechTree labs? How about you give a common sense quiz before hitting the reply button? Oh, and the 6850 does outperform the GTX 460 in DX 11.
yoyo
,Vekta, on Mar 17, 2011 02:48 PM
the keyword here is RELIABLE. i dont think you understand what that means. Also DX11 is where nvidia cards outperform ATI cards the most, btw.
Leon
,mumbai, on Mar 19, 2011 01:43 PM
@yoyo :with the new ati drivers the ati radeon 6850 does actually beat the 460. It also draws a lot kess power than the 460 both at idle and at load plus temperatures are better too. Ostensibly any card overclocked would perform better and the ati radeon 6850 is a better option for overclocking than the 460. The recent toms review also shows that it scales beautifully on crossfire than its nvidia counterpart.....Overall I would state both cards are good options and the difference in fps in various games (single card only ) is barely 1-3 fps. The ati radeon 6850 is a better card but only barely and far more cost effective....

80% of us have 15" to 17" monitors at home. For this much screensize even 8500GT or 9500GT can give good framerates at 800x600 with details high. I am talking crysis here. So why so much wrong propoganda for display cards costing more than Rs 3000/- (instead dealers should come out with more cards within Rs 3000/-)
Ryuaki
,mumbai, on Mar 19, 2011 12:55 PM
You aren't thinking long term. You can get a 18.5 LCD or even an LED (led backlight) monitor for less than 6 grand. It's a worthwhile investment
ryuzaki
,mumbai, on Mar 19, 2011 12:58 PM
Also 800 x 600 is an anachronistic resolution for gaming....A compromise if you will. Consider 1000p to be as the bare minimum.Playing a game like crysis at 800 x 600 isn't worthwhile.
Leon
,Mumbai, on Mar 17, 2011 11:25 AM
get your facts right....the ati radeon 5770 is a much better performer than the gts 450 gb. The difference in power consumption is verymarginal. However I would recommend that one should ditch these two and opt for ati radeon 6850 which offers nearly twice as much performance for a few grand more.It also scales extremely well on crossfire....
Lionel
,Mumbai, on Mar 17, 2011 11:13 AM
I concur with the write up for the most part. However it fails to give a complete picture as even though the GTS 450 1 gb is cheaper than the 5770 it does not perform as well as this card. The ati radeon 5770 offers around 10 % better performance except on titles that are "the way it is meant to be played". It's more comparable to the 5750 than the 5770. Here are some benchmarks that would consolidate my statement: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gts-450-gf106-radeon-hd-5750,2734-8.html http://www.hwcompare.com/7765/geforce-gts-450-1gb-vs-radeon-hd-5770/ The slight difference in power consumption between the two cards is really negligible. I would strongly recommend that one should ditch both these cards and opt for a 6850 which offers nearly twice as much performance for a little more dough. Also it scales extremely well whilst in crossfire mode.
