    Sony Alpha SLT-A55V Review

Jayesh Limaye, Mar 15, 2011 1254 hrs IST

Takes amateur photography to a whole new level

Good image quality in low light too, fast continuous mode shooting speed, fast and accurate AF with tracking, live phase detection, large view in EVF, mechanical zoom and focusing rings, HDR bracketing, GPS, more compact than DSLRs, ergonomic

Zoom ring locks up occasionally, Camera overheats while full HD video shooting and shuts down

We have recently reviewed the Sony NEX-3, which is a Micro Four Third systems camera, trying to get DSLR-like quality at a much lower price. Now Sony has introduced yet another camera - SLT-A55V of the Alpha series supporting all Alpha-mount (A-mount) lenses, to fill the gap between the NEX and its professional DSLR cameras. While the DSLRs feature a bulky moving pentaprism, this camera features a fixed translucent mirror (or Pellicle mirror), hence the name Single Lens Translucent or SLT. Capable of 16.2 MP RAW image capture and fast 10 fps continuous shooting speeds, with Full HD video capture, GPS tagging, 15-point autofocus and 3D Sweep Panorama, this camera may give DSLRs a run for their money. Check out the review to find out more.

Bundle
  • Sony Alpha SLT-A55V
  • Removable Lens (18-55mm zoom)
  • Wrist strap
  • USB cable
  • Battery charger with power cord
  • A/V cable
  • User manual
  • Sony PMB software disc

While the bundle is good, Sony should have included an SD memory card, but seems to have left it to be bought separately. Also, it would have been better to include an HDMI cable to connect to an HDTV.

this is one of the ace cameras in the DSLR category. i found it diificult to choose between DSLR and bridge cameras. Then checked all latest offerings, and found that all brans seem to be haroing on high zoom. have settled with sony hx100. Reasons - 30x, carl zeiss lens - that's the most superior lens i know in point and shoot cameras. GPS, 3D shoot facility adds to options. price in 20k bracket.

Dear team, I am an aspiring film maker. Would like to buy camera for short film making. My friend has suggested me to buy Canon550d. My budget is approx. 40k. Please suggest me a good camera in this range.

Lot to improve.. i think this area is best left to photography enthusiasts... tech tree can never excel in this.. I can not call this as amateur also. Not a good effort for beginner too. Read some reviews in DPR and then try typing

Lots to improve, I agree. But leave it to photography enthusiasts, I do not agree. Techtree can review more such cameras and they will eventually improve.

why would someone choose this over a cannon 550D,1100D or nikon 3100 ?

I have tried this but it cannot compare to a DSLR. Viewfinder lacks contrast and there are less number of lenses available for Sony than Canon or Nikon. Even a D3100 or EOS 1100D will beat this anyday and both are avilable for less than 30K with the kit lens.
