    Canon PowerShot G12 Review

Jayesh Limaye, Mar 08, 2011 1323 hrs IST

A fixed-lens camera with DSLR aspirations

Good image quality even in dark conditions, complete manual control, supports RAW image format, large swivel LCD screen, easy to use with dedicated dials, good Macro, 720p HD video with stereo sound capture, rugged build, HDR bracketing

Tiny field of view in optical viewfinder, no optical zoom during video capture, 4GB limit for video capture, no dedicated video capture button, a bit heavy, expensive

After the resounding success of Canon PowerShot G11 last year, Canon has brought out its successor to take things to the next level. The Canon PowerShot G12 we received for review, has everything that its predecessor had, including the 10MP CCD sensor resolution with RAW, 5x optical zoom, 2.8-inch swivel LCD screen, the optical image stabilization and the DIGIC 4 image sensor. What is different is that it features better design with EOS-style control dial, 720p HD video recording, SDXC card compatibility and tracking autofocus.

Bundle
  • Canon PowerShot G12
  • 4GB SDHC Class-4 memory card
  • Wrist strap
  • USB cable
  • Battery charger with power cord
  • A/V cable
  • User manual
  • Software disc

While the bundle is good, it would have been better to include an HDMI cable to connect to an HDTV. Also, you may find yourself running out of space with the 4GB card especially while recording HD videos.

Sir, Your ISO-Sensitivity shot samples could use improvement. The crayon set you've shown is hardly a real life scenario. Why don't you try shooting a real life indoor portrait in different ISOs and show the comparison for the user to understand the level of pixelation at various ISos. You could perhaps check DPReview.com if you are not able to understand what I mean. Cheers

Hi Jayesh, nice review. I myself am searching the Internet for a good point and shoot and then want to upgrade in a few years to a DSLR. As for the review, i disagree on a few points regarding the video capture. In my opinion, cameras like Canon S95 and the G11, G12 are high end point and shoots and video capture shortcomings ideally should not be considered. That said, it is really excpensive, as rightly pointed out. But then, S95 and G12 can be an ideal sidekick for a DSLR totting photography enthusiast. What are your views for a good non DSLR camera....the ones i shortlisted are Canon S95, Nikon S8100, Nikon P7000 and Sony HX5V. Kindly let me know your thoughts.
