Publicly downloadable from Microsoft Download Center or via Windows Update
Microsoft has announced that the first service pack for Windows 7 operating system would be available for public download from February 22 onwards. For users, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 doesn t pack any new feature but is a cumulative bunch of security updates and hot fixes. From today, Microsoft Developer Network subscribers, TechNet subscribers and Volume License customers would be able to download the Windows 7 SP1.
Windows 7 SP1 would be available as a direct download from Microsoft Download Center or through Windows Update. Before you start updating:
- Ensure the laptop is plugged in to an electrical outlet (AC) while installing Windows 7 SP1 - Save work and take back up of important files before you start the installation since it requires a reboot and implements number of changes - Installing Windows 7 SP1 requires a bit more hard drive space. Use Disk Cleanup tool to assist in freeing up hard drive space.
Let s hope that the first service pack tweaks up the system to perform bit better than usual.
Sources suggest its better to get the SP1 - it won't make a hell of a difference but you may need it to qualify your system for next update. It'll be sad if it re-installs the already installed updates i.e., I hope there is no duplication download !!??
I installed the SP1 (KB976932) today thru' a Windows Update Notification. It shows up as optional. The limits showed 44.0 - 533.1 MB but the size automatically earmarked & thereby downloaded for my W7HPSP1 was 61.3MB since I upated regularly. Took 1:35 hours on a wireless slow-medium broadband speed. No problem whatsoever.
Even I have the same question as Prithvi. Also if I format my HDD and reinstall Win 7 will it be sufficient to just install SP1 or I have to reinstall all the updates released till date again through Window Update.
