Urges gamers to wait for the complete and polished product
Over the weekend, the Internet was with gamers across the world making a beeline for the torrents to download a leaked copy of Crysis 2 (PC). While games have been leaked in the past before their retail release, this has been restricted to retail copies leaked a few days prior to the release. Crysis 2 is an exception, because this leak involves a work-in-progress build that's out a month before the official release, which is slated for March 22.
As of now, thousands of gamers have already downloaded the game. According to the word out on the Internet, the game is playable and also packs in the CryEngine 3 editor. This must be pretty devastating to Crysis, as this will definitely eat into the sales and with an unofficial build out so early, it is also a marketing nightmare. Crytek has give an official response to the development through the official forums, saying that it is deeply disappointed and ends with an appeal urging the gamers to wait for the polished final product.
The post reads, "Crytek has been alerted that an early incomplete, unfinished build of Crysis 2 has appeared on Torrent sites. Crytek and EA are deeply disappointed by the news. We encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting and purchasing the final, polished game on March 22. Crysis 2 is still in development and promises to be the ultimate action blockbuster as the series signature Nanosuit lets you be the weapon as you defend NYC from an alien invasion. Piracy continues to damage the PC packaged goods market and the PC development community."
I just pre-ordered it on Steam as a show of support for Crytek and because I know it will look Awesome on my computer. Crysis was THE game that got me into PC gaming, and I bought a GTX 470 in large part to be ready to max it out. Also, I wouldn't count PC gamers out. If the game is great I think a lot of people will buy it once they see it runs good on their hardware.
Also, I saw a bad copy of Inception at a friends house. I liked it so much I went on Amazon that night. Most people, myself included, will be willing to shell out $$$ for something they like. I liked the original Crysis and I am sure I will like Crysis 2. I just hope they focused on single player.
If a game has class n quality no matter how many free copies are available for download, avid gamers will surely buy a copy for themselves.Piracy is affecting sales world over but mind it does a kind of marketing by drawing crowds who are indifferent towards many products before hand ,as free things will have many takers, many of them turn to genuine buyers the next round when they get a taste of it.Every damn game, movie is pirated these days but see the sales on the other hand...Call of Duty sales reaching billions,Avatar's box-office haul are just to show that a good product is always appreciated and applauded.3 Idiots was on the internet the next day after it was released but did sales drop??Same thing with Ghajini..and they don't have eye candies like Avatar or any other hollywood biggies, they are the highest grossing Indian movies even with rampant piracy.Piracy is like political opposition keeps quality check, coz you can't return movie tickets or game DVDs if you dont like it.Feel sorry for Crysis franchise though, would have bought it if had a decent rig to play that.
Agree with you, Avidz. A lot of movies and games are sub-standard or bad, but that's where the net can come to one's rescue - before buying a dvd, watching a movie in a multiplex or buying a game, read reviews by both critics and other users. It can give one a fair idea to what to expect and whether something is worth the money you're gonna pay for it. That's the benefit of living in the information age. Game dvds can be returned though (depends on which shop you bought it from).
I downloaded a copy myself. Some levels are playable. Most of the game is unplayable. And most importantly, its so awesome that i will surely buy it when its out.
I'd rather wait and buy the completed retail version. People, with the advent of the internet, file sharing and torrents, have developed a habit of trying to get everything for free - movies, music, games... It takes time, a lot of money and a lot of hard work by a lot of people to create a game as big as Crysis 2. Buy the game if you wanna play. If you're not sure of paying for it wondering if the game's gonna be as good as you expect, If they release a demo (most games usually do), play that first to get an idea. Read professional reviews & pay for what you get. A lot of people livelihoods depend on it.
Piracy is killing the software, media and the entertainment industry, just to get something for free people are slowly but surely removing the existence of such companies.
