Should Nokia Adopt to Windows Phone 7?

Investors urging Nokia to do so, in order to break the Apple/Google smart-phone dominance

    mail share

The telegraph reported about a letter from an analyst in London in which he urged Nokia to adopt the Windows Phone 7, and to abandon their homebrewed Linux-based Meego mobile operating system.

Although Nokia still might be the number one cell-phone maker in the world, their smart-phone line-up is having a tough time competing with Apple's iPhone and a slew of Google Android based phones in all price ranges. But hardware isn't the reason for this failure -- the N8 has proved this all too well, it's the software. Symbian^3, while fixing many bugs from earlier versions, isn't still considered up to the mark in terms of the interface. More importantly, the number of apps supported for Symbian are not as high as the iOS or Android platforms.

On the other hand, Microsoft has done a great job with the interface for Windows Phone 7, but it still has a lot of basic things missing that would be desired by the premium smart-phone buyer.

So then, does it make sense for Nokia to make a Windows Phone 7 handset? Of course, they aren't choosing Android, so what else do they have? Or do you still believe in their Meego platform that has been upcoming for many a season now?

Nokia Should accept Windows Phone 7. because on the interface side Microsoft has key skills than any other company whether it is on PCs or mobile. If this deal get done then world will get new great Smart Phone. Google has no vision because sometimes they are going behind Android & sometime behind Chrome OS. So It will not make Android Perfect Standardize OS, it will be mixture of all fuzzy programming logics. But at the side of Microsoft is focused on Standard & understandable Platform which gives developer chance to be more productive rather than doing only finishing the targetted task. Which finally gives better products to customers. So finally Microsoft & Nokia should deal for Windows Phone 7.

"on the interface side Microsoft has key skills than any other company whether it is on PCs or mobile" Umm.. Have you ever used OSX or iOS? If you would have, you wouldn't have said that statement. Almost everything on Win7 is a cheap copy of OSX. on Phone7, they tried to overhaul it, but at the expense of hardware. Nokia who never threw in solid spec phones (as Symbian is one of the most optimized mobile OS out there), then I don't think it will ever happen. I'd rather for MeeGo, and wait for MWC to say anything. I still believe Nokia is gonna bounce back in the smartphone arena much sooner than anyone would give them credit for.

Why start again from zero? Symbian is such a matured OS, Winp7 is no match for S^3. S^3 is constantly evolving and its much better than S60 5th edition. i dont feel there is any need to ditch the OS since its capable of supporting any future features. Moreover s3 is very light, it just needs very less ram compared iOS or android. The only area where it fails to mark is UI, but i dont feel UI is bad either. S3 ui is skinnable. does android or iOS suports that. Nokia should concentrate more on hardware. Nokia should bring phones with powerfull hardware in 10-15K Rs. Should release model with dualcore processor to stay ahead in race with iphone or android. S3 does support dual core. No one can beat nokia for reliability. Nokia is hard rocking!!!

Well, as long as you have the hordes of lemmings harbouring the "android or bust" mentality you're gonna have to deal with tie-ups like this. Someone somewhere started the ruckus about symbian being an inferior OS and oh how much of eye candy and apps Android provides. And the next thing u know, uv got these android fanboys dissing Symbian for no rhyme or reason.Typical herd mentality

WHY N8??? ::: here y ans... For 23k, what more we need! Best value for money. Reliable Nokia brand, whatever west says...in east we need most features for the best price! > Of course for camera. (no need to carry a separate camera on my trips!)...its worth a 12k-15k camera! > Features like no-smart phones have; HDMI out, USB otg, FM transmitter, Free maps with free navigation!, solid build quality. > All essential smart-phone's features. (any feature that we can pick from other smartphone!) > We can experience true HD games on HDTV! > Complaints and facts: >> About UI, i choose features/quality/support against UI ! But a major fw update coming in March to fix these...can wait! >> Then Apps, how many quality apps we have in andriod!? All good apps from iOS already there on Ovi... And again we dont install million apps on our mobile! :P Finally, Symbian is not older than Windows/Linux and experienced than iOS/Android! Yes its getting revamped, once split-screen input, fast browser, fresh interface arrives, it will be no-match to any competitor! :-)

This post possibly has no relevance to the topic in discussion. But i feel we all need to pause and analyse this mad trend of rushing after "better" hardwares and more apps. Seriously, what would you need all that fluff for? My life , like many others would'nt centre around my mobile. And its scary to imagine there are people out there who’re that fixated on these little toys . What we need is to reduce our greed for all that glitter and eye candy , stuff that drives this demon called technology. The same applies to the LED , Plasma , 3D television debate. The degree of stress one lays on the mHz and pixels (after a certain point) is directly proportional to the reduction of the gift called imagination .

Let's not forget that Microsoft will get to learn a lot from Nokia in return and they too are lucky to get a co. like Nokia seeking out possible partnership/s. The one thing that both these cos need to do, if they hit it off, is to upto market-speed & still maintain the same Nokia standards, barring the small glitch in this standard recently w.r.t power management on Sym^3.

absolutely no problem. at least it makes more sense rather than focusing on forging alliance with intel which is more of a "pc" centric company than microsoft. people just dont have sense, they go on trashing a product irrespective of its merit. what people say does not matter. see what investors see. market capitalisation of nokia has tanked from high of $ 200 bn to about $ 30 bn which is 1/10th of apple . similarly had it been a open market microsoft can very easily acquire nokia if hostile situations persist. (as it had readied $ 42 b on yahoo) microsoft can surely add to the overall value to the mobile space , the way they did in the pc market. no one can ignore the force they utilised to bring pc to mainstream. if it was google in 2000's and fb's in 2010's , it surely was microsoft in the nineties. microsoft is making loss because of poor product partnerships and not because of bad product. win mo.6 was bad but mo.7 is surely good , at least than symbian ^3.

Good Joke. shifting to windows 7 is like digging your own grave. Nokia should replace there batteries with 1500 instead of 1200mah and reduce the prices to 5k to 10k. making the high end phone in 15k range.

This is very funny news. Microsoft is planning to replace windows phone 7 with windows 8 which can run on both arm and x86. Nokia should ship meego with opera, firefox and chrome browsers. That will kill everybody else. Apps are overrated.

That;s true. Apps are very much overated. All we need Couple of dozens. GPS, Radio, IM, Google, Rss..and the banking apps.......Not all but most of the so called 300000 and 200000 apps for IOS and Andriod are catered mostly to NorthAmerican Market...I don't think they apple to the rest of the world..

A series of android phones from NOKIA will be welcome by all. It doesn't hurt to license technology.

It doesn't hurt to license the technology....but Nokia will lose its differentiation...Once you go down that path, than its all downhill for the company. Nokia is different from companies like LG, Samsung, Sony etc..Also, recentlly Android is getting into a mess with all the lawsuits and the one from Oracle seems legitimate and genuine. Nokia would want to be in control of their destiny and not on the whims of others..

nokia has always been on top , this is just a minor glitch , they will come back with a bang with meego ! I dont know why people suddenly think they need thousands of apps to get going , people can hardly use even half of the installed apps on their phones so there is no point in grumbling about symbian not having enough apps !

very right.. Its just a matter of time that nokia has facing a bit crack in their market, else their products are good, not as popular as droids, not as fast as BADA, not as intuitive as iOS but still.. and sure they have realized that, they arent lazy, will sure come back with a bang.. and hell yes, app stores are just overhyped.. what do u want on ur phone, gps reciever, office app, account management, weather reporting, flight availability updates, some games, some chat apps, some social networking tools, what else?? media is playing big on most parts.. long live nokia.. we trust u..

Do all of you really think that Nokia will even consider moving to another platform?? And that too a closed platform like WP7? Have you even thought of all the losses it will take for them to change platforms?

Nobody can make a perfect OS in a day.Android has evolved after years of updated releases.its just that some started early(like apple) and some late (like nokia).the apps store is overhiped for lazy people.

Meego is just a 'me too', it will fade into oblivion with very little manufacturer support...even Nokia cannot change that. The choices for Nokia really are either android or WP7. I think Nokia will do both before the end of the year.

Meego is backed by INTEL, which too desperately needs to make its mark on the mobile segment which is currently dominated by Qualcomm Snapdragon, Intel's biggest rival - Nvidia Tegra and also Hummingbird. Both these companies are now investing big time to set launch their OS and processor in a big way. Nokia, although behind still has its fair share of loyalists, and Meego -is their first step in the right direction.

i think Nokia should contimue to work on MeeGo project along with Intel. Nokia + Intel has a really great future if the OS comes out right... just what okieeds to bring them back at the top where they once stood.......:D

I THINK IF NOKIA IS TO SUSTAIN IN THE MARKET THEY GOT TO ADOPT THE ANDROID WHICH IS THE FASTEST GROWING OS . EVEN WIDOWS 7 WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MATCH UPTO THE ANDROID FEVER AND AS FAR AS IOS IS CONSIDERD IT IS LIMITED ONLY TO I PHONE LOVERS BUT THE MAJOR PART OF MOBILE USERS ARE SHIFTING AND LIKING ANDROID . NOKIA CAN CONTINUE WITH THEIR SYMBIAN AND MEEGO THING BUT COME ON WHAT IS THE HARM IN HAVING FEW ANDROID MODELS. I MEAN THINK OF IT COMPANIES LIKE HTC AND SAMSUNG ARE EATING UP THE SHARE OF NOKIA COS BECAUSE THEY HAVE BOTH ANDROID AND WINDOWS 7 MODELS BUT NOKIA CAN HAVE AN ADDED ADVANTAGE IF THEY CAN OFFER ALL 3 SYMBIAN3 MEEGO AND ANDROID .WAKE UP NOKIA GUYS AND CHANGE ACCORDING TO MARKET DEMANDS OR TIME IS NOT FAR WHEN NOKIA WILL LOOSE IT'S NUMERO UNO POSITION .

Symbian may not have the latest bells and whistles and pretty dresses but it has something that the other OS do not have. Total user-based control and rock-solid reliability from many years of polishing and updating, something that many other OS do not concern themselves with as reliability and continuous free updates does not promote consumerism, hurts absolute profits margins or the OS developers, OEM partners and Mobile Operators alike. A business model like Nokias' is "bad" for everyone, apart from the end user. It will be a disaster for mobile users worldwide if Nokia adopts the buy-and-throw-away and upgrade OS, Windows Mobile. I await with bated breath, prayers and fingers crossed that sane shareholders of Nokia will not allow such a grotesque disfiguring of the underlying Corporate Social Responsibility principles that Nokia has become synonymous with. I for one want reliable phones that work and which I have total control over without being tied-in to any services. I am sure that there are hundreds of millions of users like me. Nokia just has to stay its' course and continue to reach out to us.

I think WP7 will evolve into a fabulous OS - give it a year (or may be more) and since Nokia needs to regain its No.1 spot, it'll be wise for them to consider a tie-up with WP7.

If Ms integrates features like Proper file manager, multitasking, copy/paste & flash 10.1 then I'll surely buy WP7 based phone.
