    ZOTAC GTX 560 Ti

Roydon Cerejo, Jan 27, 2011 1628 hrs IST

Nvidia's latest sweet-spot card is here and we are impressed

Very good performance, good bundle, priced well for a new launch, low power draw on idle, silent and effective cooler, PhysX and CUDA support

Power consumption on load is a bit high

When Nvidia launched the 8800GT back in 2007, they said that we would rarely get to see such a card that strikes a perfect balance between price and performance. For about half the price of their 8800GTX, you were getting around 70-80% performance, so naturally, the card was a huge hit with gamers and till today, is selling well under an alias, the 9800GT. AMD immediately followed suite with their own sweet spot graphics card, the HD 4850. This reference design ran scolding hot even on idle, but this didn't deter gamers as they found innovative ways to counter this problem. Following that, we had a couple of other great graphics cards in that price bracket like the GTX 260 (216), HD 5770, GTS 450, GTX 460, HD 6870. Yesterday, Nvidia pulled the curtains off yet another sweet-spot card which they call the GTX 560 Ti. Going by the series name, the GTX 560 Ti uses the new GF114 core which is based upon the second generation Fermi architecture much like the GTX 570 and the GTX 580. This means the GTX 560 Ti comes with the same optimizations which gave the other higher-end cards a huge advantage over the competition.

The GTX 560 Ti will not replace the GTX 460 but rather fill the gap between that and the GTX 570. This puts it in direct competition with the HD 6870 and the HD 6950. Looking at the specifications, compared to the GTX 460, the GTX 560 Ti has the same number of ROPs including the transistors, memory size and memory bandwidth. The shaders count has increased along with the clock speeds which in itself should give us a nice boost in performance. Nvidia claims the new card will have 33% better performance and 21% better performance/watt compared to the GTX 460. Let's not waste time and find out for ourselves.

As always, ZOTAC was the first to deliver the card to us on time for review. They've gone with the reference clock speeds and cooler apart from the fancy yellow and black overcoat which looks really good. The yellow vented parts act as, well vents for the heatsink. ZOTAC will also be bundling a pre-order code for Assassins Creed : Brotherhood which can be downloaded from their site.

Bundle

  • Instruction manual
  • Driver CD
  • Case badge
  • Two 6-pin to Molex adapter
  • DVI to VGA adapter
  • Assassins Creed : Brotherhood pre-order coupon

Next, lets have a look at the card it self.

excellent review ur benchmarks r accurate but when u give a benchmark show the comparison with the top cards then the readers will clearly know the difference and they can make a better choice and kindly include overclocking in reviews

is this really an expert review? i would like to point out few incomplete info about your review which is crucial for readers, 1. Testbench : Windows 7 Ultimate, but you didn't mention whether its 32 bit or 64 bit (okay you are using 3GB of memory) it has to be properly mentioned in every test setup. 2. Except FC2 there is no info about the frame rates whether they are the maximum or average fps obtained. (its even better to see minimum fps graphs included in every test) 3. There is no proper info mentioned about power consumption whether its a whole system or gpu only (yeah its whole system) but it has to be mentioned there. 4. Again!!! there is no info about ambient temp whether you guys done with open bench or closed setup with A/C on/off in temp of 16 c <or ???????!!!!!!!! 5. Dont you have a sound meter to check the noise? does our techtree running very low on money or the lack of financial support from the mighty UTV who is one of the leading production company in Indian cinema! lack of all these small yet very crucial info is what making this very popular Indian tech website lag behind from much average but better foreign tech websites in terms of quality and professionalism :):)

You guys at TT are nvidia fanboys or what!? What kind of review site benchmarks current gen card with the competitors last gen card!? HD6xxx series are even less power hungry than HD5xxx series & that's a fact. You guys are just drinking nvidia's koolaid & trying to make us drink that! This card is okay no doubt but face it nvidia have been handed their backside over the last 2 gens...all this fermi architecture is just hype & for fanboys.

Roydon, along with GPU reviews it would be really nice if you could also suggest the lowest possible PSU that would be stable while powering the test rig. I know it might be a bit of work but will go a long way in helping people build better systems.
