Just as we suspected a few months back when we reviewed the HD 6970, AMD's dual GPU monster finally sees the light of day and in the hands of AMD's Matt Skynner a few days back. Just like the older HD 5970 which was a dual GPU card, the HD 6990 will be AMD's flagship offering and will go head on with Nvidia's GTX 580. Codenamed "Antilles", the HD 6990 is a mash-up of two 40nm Cayman GPUs v.i.z the HD 6970 or the HD 6950. This is isn't clear yet since the actually specifications weren't revealed. Since the card will sport two GPUs it's going to be as long as the HD 5970 and probably consume similar amount of power.
The card will also sport a new cooler design that makes use of a cylindrical blower that draws air from the rear and channels it through the vapor chamber heatsink and then directly out o the cabinet. The HD 6990 is powered by two 8-pin power connectors so at least a 650W power supply is in order. With a launch date set to this quarter, expect a lot more details very soon.
