PS3 Hack: CoD Modern Warfare Users Bear the Brunt

Users lose accounts due to seemingly unfixable exploit

Not long after the prolific hacker George "geohot" Hotz made the PlayStation 3 root key public, hackers have it easy to exploit the consoles and its software. The first casualties being Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (CoD: MW) series of games. Hackers have targeted CoD: MW multiplayer components, where players have to contend with simple cheats and vulgar messages on the status bars to serious instances of accounts being hacked.

Infinity Ward posted an acknowledgment on its forums essentially saying that nothing could be done to fix the issue as the Modern Warfare games rely on the platform encryption system, unlike Treyarch's Black Ops, which has its own independent security layer. To add insult to injury, Infinity Ward further informs, "At this time, we do not have the ability to restore or adjust individual stats," which is quite ironic as it's followed by a statement that promises, "We are looking at EVERY option available to us to help any user affected." Right... that sounds convincing.

CoD Modern Warfare

It has instead requested players to play with friends on private servers and stay away from public servers. As dumb as it may sound, it is a prudent thing to do at the moment, given the sheer number of hacked servers that could compromise your account and stats for good. Then again, what's the point of a multiplayer game, when you can't abuse and humiliate complete strangers? Infinity Ward signs off the post with a promise to do away with platform dependent security, but that does nothing to assuage the massive losses of gamers, who are very, very angry at the developer. But look at the bright side, at least you can now dismiss your incompetency with a quick "u hax!!!" retort.

I don't know who did this mess with the game but i just hope the freaking craker can get what he/she deserves!!! is not nice to cheat on any kind of game, people that pay for a game want to play it good, not need to cheat, for what?? cheat is for loosers!!! Hopefully the company can fix this issue as soon as possible! (I like what you wrote Darren) (y)

Microsoft is behind the PS3 Modern Warfare hacks. So for revenge assemble a team of PS3 geniuses to hack the Xbox 360 and start ruining their console as well. Eye for an eye tooth for a tooth. :-)

Umm... this was happening long before the key got out and they didn't care a whole lot then. Supporting your game after release instead of borderline abandoning it does wonders! (Map packs don't count as support).

The end of Call of Duty multiplayer for Playstation 3. I am forced to get Xbox Live because these g*d damn cheaters are polluting psn. I swear, COD hackers will get their PS3 banned in the future. Also, MW3 future sales for PS3 looks bleak. p.s. Imagine, cheaters vs cheaters = boredom.

I find your statement above kind of sarcastic. You think its funny to hack complete straingers, damage or remove their account, own them on every match going and sit there with your cheesy grin thinking its funny and mature? Come on, this is nothing to do with the developers, Activision need to partner with Sony on helping to take down this idiot (Geo what ever his name is) and damage is bank and reputation to life? Its theft, damage and millions of gamers dont pay £300 or more including games for people like him to help damage property and costs. The hackers who are using this are low lifes, very sad little people and need to show their age. I mean who thinks its cool to hack a game or even steal or remove someones account. Grow up get a real job and stop damaging peoples lives who are effected financialy

You would make a much better argument if you had a freaking clue what youre talking about. Geohot did not make these hacks. He found a way to let the PS3 run unsigned code with the intent of restoring OtherOS. He is not directly to blame for ANY of the game hacking going on. Not to mention, Sony HAVE took him to court. Over letting the PS3 run unsigned code. IF they could charge him with these hacks going on, they would, in an instant. Because as it stands, they don't have a case against him.
