Puts Woods on probation, denies the golfer's infidelity behind the move
Tiger Woods has been a regular feature on the eponymous Tiger Woods PGA Tour series, in a business relationship spanning well over a decade. The series broke tradition for the first time in 13 years by omitting Tiger Woods in the box art of the latest game Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters. The Box art on the standard edition across all three platforms (Xbox 360, Wii and PS3) of the game do away with Tiger Woods and feature an oversized Masters Logo instead.
As a consolation, Woods will appear on the box of the Collector's Edition, but that probably means EA wants to show that it's still associated with the delinquent golfer, but wants to dissociate itself with Woods' tainted public image ever since the scandal was exposed.
On being questioned, EA Sports president Peter Moore denies the obvious, "But Tiger is right there on the PS3 version of the game with Move support, which was very good for us and Sony last year. We'll continue that. You shouldn't read anything into the fact that Tiger's not featured on the box art of that particular edition. "
That is pretty hard to believe in the light of stern words from EA boss John Riccitiello, where he said how Woods' lack of form makes little sense for EA to have a business relationship with the golfer. John displayed blunt corporate diplomacy when he stated, "We have no plans to move away from him, but it's a business relationship on the basis of we make the best golf game and he's the best golfer. Both of those things need to be true in the long run for the partnership to make sense." His statement took a more patronising turn with him concluding, "He sort of stuck with us for a very long time and we made great business together, and we're willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for a period of time."
According to a Eurogamer report, sales of the 2011 instalment of the golfing franchise was down 68 percent compared to the previous year's edition. It seems the omission of Tiger Woods from the box art is a part of a fire control exercise on EA's part, where they want to do away with non performing assets.
