Many decades ago, having a telephone at home meant that you're a well-to-do fella. We still remember the days when an entire building in the housing society had just one or at the most two phone lines, with neighbors making a beeline to make phone calls. Thanks to the exploding mobile revolution in India, that situation is long gone. It's safe to say that a majority of people in a single household today have a cellphone of their own. Following this pattern is another device - the computer.

Soon the computer, just like a cellphone, will become a personal belonging rather than a shared entity. While children are hooked to 3D games, daddy and/or mommy are busy staring into their company laptop. And as laptops are no longer power-crunched (and unaffordable), as they used to be a decade ago, they are the obvious path for the sort of personalized electronic hardware concept we talked about.

There are a myriad of models available in electronic malls these days; with specifications so similar it'll make your head spin. What we're offering you today is a buying guide that helps you pick models that are worth buying.

Caution: Do not imply that just because we haven't chosen a laptop that you like (or own) means that it is pathetic. But what we're saying is that the following models below are worth the money. We'll also tell you what to expect in every price range:

Under Rs. 20,000

This price bracket is primarily dominated by Netbooks - those small 10-inch mini-laptops that are good enough to do basic tasks and generally deliver great battery life. Now, most Netbooks in this price range have almost ditto specifications and pricing - which may make you want to pull your hair out while making a buying decision. So, first things first - if you are looking to spend no more than Rs. 15,000, then your netbook ought to have at least these specs:

  • an Intel Atom N450/N455 processor
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 160GB hard drive

In this range, the Acer Aspire D255 comes with Windows XP pre-installed and is a decent choice for Rs. 16,000. For people unwilling to cough up the Microsoft tax can save a grand by choosing the Asus Eee PC 1005PX for Rs. 15,000. But if you honestly ask us, we'd say ignore both, invest a little more and get the HP Mini 210-2010tu. As my friend and colleague Prasad once said, "Screwing up a trackpad in a laptop is like screwing up a steering wheel in a car". Netbooks are already crammed for space and when you couple that with mediocre human input peripherals, it just messes up the experience in the long run.

Asus Eee PC 1005PX

Amongst all the Netbooks I have personally tried out till date, the HP Mini 210's has got to be THE best! The surface is extremely smooth (unlike the ribbed or dotted patterns of some) and the sensitivity is spot-on. Add to that a well-designed chiclet keyboard that's fairly easy to type on as well, and it makes using the netbook more comfortable than usual.

HP Mini 210

It's got a little more grunt than a regular Netbook - an Atom N470 that runs at 1.83 GHz and 2GB of RAM, which drives the Windows 7 Starter aboard without a lag. We already know why it makes sense to choose Windows 7 Starter over XP. Lastly, a 320GB hard drive is more roomy to store your content. It sells for Rs. 20,000 and we feel it's a worthy buy in this range.

I am using Sony Vaio S series VPCS137GG. 13 inches, Core i5, 500GB, 4GB and Win 7 Pro. At RS.65,000, it offers a very good combination of portability and features. A really good laptop. I was surprised to not find it here.

The Vaio S-series are like toned down Z-series. They lose the backlit keyboard, the better quality screen, carbon fiber and aluminum, discrete graphics and of course, the ssd-s. While the S-series are a great choice for an exec on a budget who is looking for a reliable and portable laptop, it doesn't really qualify as a vfm product. Infact, my Vaio E series (EA36) outperforms yours anyday (mine has a discrete gpu) and costs only 56K- almost 10 grand cheaper.

A friend of mine bought an HP Mini 210 quite recently. The specs of this netbook are totally awesome- you forgot to mention the best part- its screen has 1366x768 res!!! Need I say that everything looks so crisp?!! Also, if my memory is correct, the hdd spins at 7200 rpm as opposed to 5400 in most notebooks. Also, the battery life's killer- I've seen it churn out near 6-7 hrs of uptime. The build's also pretty good and so are the speakers (better than my bro's Aspire One, anyway). One area which I do not like about this netbook is its input devices- contrary to what you said. I hated the touchpad which did not have physically demarcated buttons (almost all HP consumer notebooks are following this trend) and its lukewarm texture. Secondly, the keyboard doesn't have the regular set of Function Keys. For eg, you have to press Alt+Fn+F4 instead of the normal Alt+F4 combo. Did I mention that the keyboard markings aren't too legible either?? Anyways, each to his own- not everybody has the same opinion about something- especially subjective stuff like keyboards and touchpads. In short, it's a totally vfm option with some not so serious drawbacks. No wonder it's a hit.

Dude, I believe there has to be an option in the BIOS that lets you change the Function key's duty back to regular from the media control/brightness etc. alternate functions that they control

How about Toshiba R700 thats too good to own....
Rohan
,TechTree, on Dec 23, 2010 03:59 PM
I feel it's overpriced, compared to the Acer Timeline X 4820T. Both models have very similar specs as well as thinness. But the Acer costs almost half the price (~Rs. 37,000) of the Portege R700 (Rs. 65,000), which makes me wonder why Toshiba is really such a premium?
dude
,kochi, on Dec 24, 2010 04:08 PM
Ummm... better build quality??!! The R700 has a premium look and feel to it. Something similar would be the Sony Vaio Z series. Sure, it's expensive- but it's fast, tiny, has good battery life, packs in a mid-range gpu, and last, but not at all the least, awesome build quality. These high end exec laps are always priced at an insane level anyway.

None of Sony Vaio series is mentioned. Are they not good enough to bag a place in any category? I am searching a light weight 15.6 inch laptop mostly for multimedia & browsing & a bit of gaming. Will Acer's Timeline series laptop a good choice?
dude
,kochi, on Dec 22, 2010 08:26 PM
Absolutely. Check out the 5820TG- if it's avail here- it's a superb choice. As for the Vaios, I own one ;-) Bought it after a LOT of research. I play games on it regularly. One of the best things about it is how cool it runs- it never gets hot. Drawbacks are lack of switchable graphics and the 3 hr battery life. However, it is NOT a vfm option- infact, you pay a premium for it (worth the extra dough, imho- it's one of the few options out there with a high end i5-560).
