McAfee Internet Security Suite 2011 Review

Nikhil Rastogi, Dec 05, 2010 1000 hrs IST

Is this heavyweight champion still king of the ring? We test to find that out

Clean streamlined look, POP3 spam filter for even web-based e-mail accounts, security reports and maps, bonus tools, good all-round package

Inane demo download process, anti-virus doesn't allow exceptions/whitelists, firewall not smart enough, poor parental control, help is only online and doesn't explain adequately

McAfee is no doubt a heavy hitter in the software Security department. Over the years it has gained trust by providing good protection to millions of computer users worldwide. We got a hold of McAfee Internet Security Suite 2011 and tried it out, and here's what we found out!

Download woes

McAfee for some odd reason loves to torture users with their inane methods to download demo software from their site. It is as if they do not want users to try out their software at all. I can almost imagine a serious-looking (secret service type) suited salesman saying "Don't try it, Just Buy it, it's that good!"

To download the software, McAfee insists that one register an account with them, go through two different legal policies to get to the profile page, then activate the account in 5 mins via email. The ordeal doesn't end there; one then needs to manually navigate to the download page (which confusingly resembles a buying page) to finally start the download.

"Phew, now I can begin with the testing", I first thought, but apparently, McAfee had something else in store for me. Instead of offering the entire package to download straight off, now the McAfee "Download Manager Setup" had to be downloaded and run in order to download the full package.

NK badname hua McAfee tere ... Oops! I meant Barkha badnaam hui Raja tere liye.. Coming to the point - I agree with the review. McAfee is good, but not at par with competiiton. I've used McAfee in the past, but each time I endup switching to Norton or Trend Micro. One issue was Quarantine. Second was it often used to conflict with desktop search engines (Google/X1). Also performance was issue, with background process slowing down copmuter often.

Nice AV reviews back to back! Nice work, Nik! :-) Now hope to see a comparison between all of them in one single concise article.

Do you mean to say that If I purchace the product from their website, I will be paying more than if I go and get it from the shop? cause, it will have MRP printed on it and the shopkeepers will hardly give it below that. Am I right?
