Front camera for FaceTime, smaller Retina glass display, USB port and 3-axis gyroscope
Earlier, we reported that Apple has been rumored of working on the second generation iPad which will be shown in February next year. Now, a Taiwanese news website DigiTimes has noted that Apple will be adding five new features in the iPad 2 according to a source who tipped the information to Economic Daily News, a Chinese-language news paper. These features include Retina display, front facing camera for FaceTime, USB Port, and smaller form factor.
Now we know you're slowly getting mad at us for writing too much about Apple who doesn't bother launching the iPad in India. However, there is no harm in staying abreast with developments that might help instead of staying aloof. Rumor mills and spin doctors are already speculating the theories that Apple will show off in a smaller 7-inch iPad 2 sometime early next year. Also, this new iPad would be slimmer than the current generation one as per Apple's patent application. So we can expect a form-factor of anything between 7-inch to 9-inch.
In the iPad 2, Apple would be using Retina Display technology with thinner glass panels. The IPS-panel technology based Retina glass is a bit costly but they improve the color and image quality. Hence, expect that part to add up to the total price of the iPad.
Industry based component makers also stated that Apple would be adding a USB port to make the iPad 2 more connection friendly. This kind of contradicts Apple CEO Steve Jobs' response to an Apple product fan - We don't see USB 3 taking off at this time. No support from Intel, for example. So instead, we can expect USB 2.0 in iPad 2. Sounds like some cryptic chronology - USB 2.0 in iPad 2 and may be USB 3.0 in iPad 3. That's Apple for you.
For the gaming frenzy folks, Apple will add 3-axis gyroscopic sensors to enhance the possible gaming experience. Finally, Apple will add a camera in the front panel to enable FaceTime which is already available to iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4 devices. Once again, I'd like to point out that these are just preliminary buzzes you'll hear till the actual product is shown off.
Hi,
your article is based on rumours that have been going on for a month or so.
There are a few thing that you must note.
1. 7" iPad is a complete NO - NO. Mr Jobs himself denied the possibility during his Oct presentation. The smaller iPad is called the iPod Touch. The iPad will be of the same size.
2. USB dock is also not possible. Apple had launched the 30 pin camera connecter, which consists a SD card reader and a USB drive. so it will make this device useless if they bring a USB dock. they never will do such a thing. Plus USB 3.0 is long way.. it has to first come in its macbooks and imacs series before smaller devices.
On Rumour base..
3. There are rumour going round that the new iPad will have a carbon fibre outer structure as compared to the Aluminium case in the present model. A patent had been filed a few weeks back.. suggesting such rumour.
4. 30 pin connector on the side (possibility), So that the iPad can be connected to the keyboard dock in the horizontal position. This is also based on the rumour due to a patent filed by apple for such design.
5.Another rumour that going around is that the new iPad will have an in-built sim as in the proposed iphone 5. So that you can link with any subscriber both GSM and CDMA. (This is mainly in the US, as iPhone is at the end of the partnership with AT&T and possible start of partnership with Verizon - CDMA. Even both operators are suggested).
6. I agree with you that the new iPad will have a front facing camera for facetime but rumour suggests that the back facing camera is a NO - NO. As it will be difficult to use this device as a regular camera as in iPhone and iPod touch.
I don't think that there would be any 7 inch or 9 inch model. Steve jobs, on the 7 inch size, once said in an interview that "This size is useless unless you include sandpaper so users can sand their fingers down to a quarter of their size." It seems unlikely to me. Also, I don't agree on the USB part. It would be very un-apple to say the least.
