Indians Don't Prefer Pirating Software (Really?)

Rohan Naravane, Nov 18, 2010 1936 hrs IST

From all that we've seen, we really have doubts over this survey

    mail share

Back in July, I wrote this piece based on a thought that had kept lingering in my head since long - Piracy. We got a fiery response from the users in the comments section. While, many did talk about constructive ways to end piracy, there were quite a few who openly embraced it without any remorse. For example to quote what one fellow said, "I will live, eat and drink pirated software from OS to third party software for Windows and even PS2 Games. I'm not interested in spending a rupee on any software unless the price is affordable to everyone. I hail piracy and it will rule forever." This is just one of the many comments that showed the community distressed with high software ownership costs.

And today, The Economic Times reported a survey conducted by Microsoft that says 86 percent consumers in India are ready to pay more for genuine software. About 2000 people from India that had a personal computer and were prime decision makers participated in this survey. Now if these figures are true, then we'd be nothing but proud. But from the response we've seen on the matter till date, we're a little skeptical. Maybe the people surveyed were afraid to accept their submission to piracy, and thus chose to answer otherwise. But the good thing to take out of this survey is the increased awareness amongst the Indian people about the existence and ill-effects of pirated software.

The survey also said that 75 percent people believed genuine software is more secure, stable and easier to keep up-to-date. We'd agree, as using some pirated versions of Windows won't let you get critical security updates or bug fixes, which in turn could compromise on system stability. On a side note, we believe the purchases of genuine Microsoft Windows must have got a shot in the arm due to rising laptop sales and its monopoly - most of them have an original copy pre-installed and inclusive of the total cost.

But it's not like you cannot do without Windows to use your PC - there's always Linux. So, do you agree with the results of this survey?

Here is my 2 cents. Assembled computers almost 100% have pirated software. Branded desktops and laptops mostly come with genuine OS installed. Cheap laptops that come without OS mostly end up with pirated software. Some good news is that since OS is pre-installed so it is not pirated else it would have been for sure. But Office used is mostly pirated. Office with Outlook is priced insane. I use the MS Office Student version without Outlook, got it under 3k. I use free Outlook Alternative for email client like Windows Live Mail and Thunderbird. Open Office cannot save Office 2007 format docx, pptx, xlsx. Linux is not widely accepted because of lack of support from hardware vendors. Can you get iPhone or iPod Touch to work in Linux. Can you get Nokia Ovi Suite for Linux. Even if some wise Linux geek says you can it will not be officially supported so you are on your own. Even for Airtel usb modem, the drivers are for Windows and Mac only. For Linux, you can install it but again not officially.

In US the minimum hourly wage is an average of 7$. Windows 7 Home Premium comes for around 85$ which is 12 hours. Please calculate how much it should cost in India depending upon the minimum wages and let us all know. Specially as there is no cost of producing an extra copy!

I disagree completely (as of today at least) that Indians don't wish to use pirated software. I see many of normal middle class users still resorting to use of pirated s/w. Do they know its gonna bite 'em back someday .. hell .. yeah !! .. but there's still hope cuz somecody always has a solution for working around legal s/w. This has a lot to do with price - remember the price conscious Indian - rich or no rich doesn't really matter, Indians are price conscious first and then piracy conscious. I feel the survey may be misleading - what the govt. needs to do is to make examples of 'pirates' and let ordinary users know its not in their interest to use dubious s/w.

Except that these "pirates" are ordinary users. Governments should be working in their citizens' interest, not sacrificing the nation's needs for the sake of a few big corporations. The American government tried to do that with music "piracy", and see where the recording industry is now... No one buys music CDs anymore.

It is what it is & I hope MS reduces its rates ... I feel a 30% reduction in sale price will make s/w less exposed to piracy .. lets not forget the taxes levied by Indian Govt. for the buyers to bear.

I hate pirated stuff... and when I got to know about Linux I was the happiest... It took me a while to move from Windows 7 to Linux.. I installed it on my Laptop first then I was confident enough to get it on my desktop... I'm using UBUNTU and I am very pleased with it. It takes a bit of getting used to but I highly recommend a try....Trust me it is quality and freedom (From viruses and high costs ) in 1.

Everyone will pay money he they get a proportionate value in return. That means MS needs to migrate to a cheaper subscription based model for indian customers. I myself paid 1500 for vista starter OEM. I hated paying the windows tax. But i decided to pay the bare minimum to have the piece of mind. I have seen that pirated software is usually not kept up to date which is a problem.

Piracy = Theft One who pirates is a thief. If you justify piracy, you are justifying shoplifting. You just don't pick up stuff from a shop just because you like it and can't afford it! All software on my PC are original and I like to see the expression on the face of people when I tell that.

Dear Aman, please do not compare buying stuff from a shop and software/hardware. Simple example. Ipad is not legally available for sale in our country India. But still it is being sold on ebay. Ask the guys at apple and they will say it illegal. Lots and lots of software, movie titles and games are not sold in shops in India. Can you suggest a lit source. And yes, dont ask me to pay by paypal. I do not know it paypal is a boy or a girl.

I didn't know that Software needed to be purchased until my father bought me my first PC which had genuine windows xp. Now I use genuine vista which came with my laptop with a dual boot Ubuntu. I have paid for good and useful software but also insist on good free software. I have paid for softwares like MS Office or other editing software I need continuously. Original software gives you the Technical Support. No software support has let me down yet.

Like many of you stated, Rise in piracy is proportional to the exorbitant prices. I personally have a mix between pirated and original S/W. My OS(VISTA HOME PREMIUM) and Anti-Virus(KAS) are both original apart from that all the games i get from some torrent site with a patch. I have not compromised on security and stability. Of late the prices of certain games have been reduced to a great extent like many of you may remember GTA for IV Rs500 thats genuinely affordable. There are a number of awesome titles for the same price. If you say that you still cant afford that you probably wont have the rig to play it anyways.

Spot on! Gaming Software companies realised the mistake quite early and thats the reason they decided to price the software for Indian market accordingly and this is the reason you get a GTA for Rs500/- If MS incorporates the same strategy of large scale economies there would be no room left for other OSes as everyother PC would be genuinely a MS PC.

No one in their good senses "like" to pirate things. We Indians are smart people. our thinking is "why pay for something which you can get for free". Which makes sense. So, if i can get a cracked version of win7 on torrent. why should i pay for it. when the most important thing for me is to just go online and listen music. Yet they are not that experimental! otherwise most of indians would have started using free OS and softwares like ubuntu. which are free, more stable, efficient, and "legally FREE"

Most of the people are not aware about free operating system like Ubuntu, Opensuse etc. B'cos no advertisement publish for linux. On the other hand microsoft is good on advertisement!! So when people go to buy any computer they ask for Windows 7 but not ready to pay single rupee for it :). Until some organization come up with major advertisement of linux nobody ready to look for it :(

An American can spend $300 on Win7 but expecting Indians to shell out 15K is not going to cut it. This becomes a problem because while selling things in Inida, prices get converted from Dollars to Rupees, but the purchasing power doesn't scale with that same factor. An average middle class American household would make anywhere between $2.5k to $3.5K after tax. In the US a good laptop costs 1K USD. So theoretically buying a laptop us 1/36th of a years income. To match that in Inida you would need to make 18 lakhs a year after tax. If you surveyed people from that income group I don't think they would have an issue with paying for software. You can't expect people making $750 a month to pay $300 for Win 7 and $75 for CoD. They don't in the US either.

Indians get paid 10 times less than their US/European counterparts. After that you expect them to pay the same price for a genuine product? It might be different if the price of the product matches that of Indian Salaries.

Being a responsible website, Techtree is bound to be politically correct. But in a free market, its the common users that decide which strategy works. In India, s/w and film DVD prices are ridiculous. We will continue to indulge in piracy until s/w companies price their products sensibly. They must realise that "economies of scale" model is the only way to survive in India. Take Moser Baer for example. About Linux, it is the worst option. I have dabbled in Linux for 4 years only to realise that it is only for the uber (read stupid) geeks. Linux won't succeed unless some big Co. like google takes control, like it has done with Android.

No..! I aslo prefer genuine softwares. But prices always matter. Please consider prices of MS against salaries in US and same in India. That is very very difficult to afford for common man. 100$ is base price of MS OS in US, while avg monthly salary is 1000-1200$ in US. Almost 10 times. While in India MS OS Price is 4500/- (Discounted Price) aginst 45000/- is not the average monthly salary. Many people are earnig 3000/- per month even today. So better to use Linux and OpenOffice.

Its a vicious circle...The software makers price their products high to make up the production costs from the few genuine customers..The prices could probably be scaled down had more ppl been buyin their softwares...But then, its the same high cost thats deterring many from loosening their purse-strings..Someone has to yield , and thats not us,the buyers.

the piracy is ENDLESS.the open source is the effective way. for reduce the piracy, microsoft can reduce the original operating system price, even the MS ULTIMATE is rs,11000 means, there is no way to buy if you are a single person. the only solution is reduction of rates!!!!!!!!!!

Its a touchy issue... People use dozens of software on their computers for different tasks... usually ONE software caters to only a PARTICULAR task. Overpriced software and games ARE a primary reason why piracy exists. I purchased Win 7 Ultimate for 11,000 bucks... I needed it so I bought it but comparatively Mac OS X comes for just Rs 3000 and there are no multiple versions - something Microsoft should be looking into. Why not develop ONE version of Microsoft Windows OS and keep the price low? Everyone will buy it then. Movie DVDs should not cost so much especially since the cost of producing DVDs is peanuts. A movie has to be digitally mastered and authored before its produced but that alone doesn't justify the high cost of dvds. Similarly, audio CDs cost too damn much even after 25 years. I feel game prices are ok, considering a game contains more content than a movie and it takes quite a lot of time and people to develop a 50 hour long detailed game like Mass Effect 2. As for software, I try to find a legal and free alternative to an expensive software. A lot of utility and productivity and safety software are absolutely free - browsers, chat messengers, antivirus/antimalware/firewall, system maintenance, image editors, media players, even office suites are free. For most tasks that you do on a computer, you do have a choice to use a well-designed software that's free to download and use. For all but the OS and some very specialized tasks, you don't need to buy much software.

This has 2 be the biggest joke i have heard from an IT company so far N i quote them "86 percent consumers in India are ready to pay MORE for genuine software" ROFL Wat do they mean by more???? dat we will go ahead n pay them over MRP!!!!! I am pretty certain they r lying thru their teeth and this is jus nothin but a marketing strategy to show ppl in a way that many ppl dont mind shelling out their pockets dry on HEAVY priced MS software's. I have purchased only 1 genuine Software and that's kaspersky internet security...which was for Rs 500 and i didnt mind payin that much. If Win 7 was available for below Rs 3000 then i would happily pay up for it (Home Premium is available for Rs 6000) Jus take this example.....Moser Baer gives out original DVD of movies for as less as Rs 100 and i go out n buy those DVD cos pirated DVD dont have the quality even if they are priced lower then that . On my front Moser Baer has def killed the movie piracy issue. There is no doubt i want a good quality Software but the price has to be right...and the sooner these brainless mundane ppl marketing software get it the better it will be for all of us

I am a Software Engineer have been using PC since 10 years and till now I have not spent a rupee on software and will never do so. All my previous 5 computers had pirated windows, office etc, my present laptop come with windows7 installed so it is original, otherwise even this would have been pirated. Indians will never pay for software. Only Software companies buy original software. Throughout my school and college none of people I knew had ever purchased any software. Microsoft on one hand has made a monopoly because of which people are forced to use windows and office, but it is not at all affordable, so people have no choice but to go for pirated software. Does it make sense to spend Rs 25,000 on a desktop computer and then spent another Rs 20,000 on software, it is obviously more tempting to go for pirated stuff. If Microsoft wants us to buy stuff, then the prices should be as follows. 1. Windows less than Rs 5000 2. MS Office less than Rs 3000 3. MS Visual Studio less than Rs 10,000 but having said that these days people are becoming more concerned about piracy and more and more people are willing to buy original stuff. Its a slow change.

Well, i have been using windows since long back when windows 98 had come. I have always been using Pirated Windows, no matter what.. I have never encountered any problem whatsoever with windows, and my windows is always secure using best of antivirus and firewalls, which too are Pirated. I know what everyone says, pirated software is suspicious to use, but i always download original software from the manufacturers website and crack it using a keygen or patch, and that in no way compromises my security, i am assured of that. I am myself a computer professional. :) And yeah, my curent windows which i run on my laptop is Original Windows 7 Ultimate.. and that too becoz i got it as a gift from microsoft when they shipped it to many from their Windows 7 House Party Event. Otherwise, i would have been indeed using Pirated Windows 7.

Survey conducted by Microsoft. Obviously, it's NOT reliable. The software industry is repeating the mistakes of the recording industry. These skewed surveys are just a way for the big players to stick their heads in the sand and pretend nothing's wrong... Except, in reality, everything's wrong. Starting with the price. I run a pirated version of Windows. Got it via bittorrent, passes Microsoft's genuine advantage test. I get Windows updates and stuff just like genuine users do. So why should I fork out Rs 9000 for it? If the price was reasonable, like 1000 or maybe 2000, I'd pay without a thought... It's LEGAL, after all. But seriously... If Microsoft were to offer a bare-minimum version of Windows for free, or at a NOMINAL price (say 500-600) piracy would be down by 80%. It's not as if people who're paying for Professional or Ultimate are suddenly gonna switch, so no loss of revenue either.

Price of windows 7 professional ~ Rs.9000/- in India, and around Rs.4500/- US price Now assuming I purchased a Win Vista Laptop(that we already know is so resource intensive), and I want to upgrade to 7, why on earth would I shelve this amount?? 2 options left are - live with the laggy Vista - or go for a pirated 7 !! My suggestion: Software prices need to based somewhere on the avergae salary of that country. My Salary during my US stay was approx $100(minus tax) per day(Approx Rs.1.3 lac per month). Here my salary is around Rs. 50K per month). So i earn more in US and price of computer hardware and software in cheap as compared to price in India. Who would purchase at such high prices?

Agreed. This makes sense. If the price is kept low, then the company would still benefit as more and more people would come out and buy, and the numbers add up - that is how the businesses grow in India - The number of customers is huge. So the price must be adjusted
