    Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ10

Jayesh Limaye, Nov 15, 2010 1300 hrs IST

Excellent 12.1 MP camera, but with an unreasonable price tag

Good image quality, plenty of options to control, compact and lightweight, good image stabilization, 12x zoom

Price, GPS may not work always

Not everyone wants to lug around a large and heavy, feature-rich camera and not everyone wants to settle for a compact camera that drastically cuts down on features. Panasonic seems to have sensed this when it launched the DMC-TZ7 last year. Now, about a year later, they have launched a new overhauled version of the same camera called the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ10.

This camera has got a 14.5 MP CCD, which can shoot at up to 12.1 MP resolution and comes with a powerful optical zoom of 12x. Panasonic also has an optimized digital zoom mode where the camera works to produce better image with digital zoom.

A new and improved image stabilization mechanism known as Power O.I.S. is also present in this camera. Perhaps the feature that instantly sets this camera apart from others is that it contains a GPS receiver to be able to Geo-tag photos and videos using a built-in database of over 5,00,000 landmarks. As is true with most digital cameras today, this one also features HD video recording at 720p with stereo sound. Let us take a look at how this camera actually performs.

Bundle

  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ10
  • Battery
  • USB 2.0 cable
  • A/V cable
  • Battery charger with power cable
  • Wrist strap
  • Manual
  • Software disc

I have its little brother ZS5 [TZ8]. It is TZ8 - GPS. The Camera rocks. My brother got it for me from USA for $180. To clarify some points: + It captures video @ 720p. Even WVGA video is great from this cam. + It has manual controls for A/S/I + Its iA mode is superb. But still do verify your pics after taking them, As my pics in the snow looked over exposed. + Programmable mode is fantastic + intelligent zoom (16x) is great. I always keep it on. + face recognition is welcomed. + LCD visible in sunlight. - TZ10 GPS is not of much use in India, as it will show just co-ordinates of your location, instead of name. - Pics in low light is not much impressive - anti-shake is not impressive. - Only Panorama assist. It should have actual panorama. I would also like to see some kind of mono-color night mode on it.

The camera has a fully automatic mode called iA (intelligent Auto) mode... and the video captured is 720p(which is not full HD). And the camera does possess full-manual controls where you turn the settings wheel to 'M'...

It does not let you focus manually. It has AF Macro, Macro Zoom and Off in the settings, that is all.

Fantastic review. I have read atleast 10-15 reviews but this is the best. Even simpler and better than the reviews of sites like photographyblog@com etc. It is very simple and great. Almost covered all the pros and cons. BTW, its current cost is around Rs. 16000/-. Flipkart has lower price.

I wanted a good compact super zoom camera and settled for Samsung wb650 for Rs16500(same camera excluding gps + amoled ==> wb600 screen costs Rs13K). Initially i shorlisted tz10 but as the review states its too costly. I then checked the compact super zoom test from dpreviewdotcom and settled for Samsung wb650. Its terrific value for money!!! good IQ,features, smooth 15x super zoom,720p video and lot of other features.Go for Wb650 if you like the features of tz10 and IQ but were hesitant due to price or go for wb600 if you dont care about gps+amoled screen for 13k. Check out compact camera super zoom test in dpreviewdotcom and decide yourself.

Good review, but would have liked if other options were also provided and certain images could have been uploaded in its full glory for the readers to click and check it out, instead of just the cropped and resized ones. Btu what I don't get is the unusual pricing of this camera in India. Got this one from Germany for 195 Euros which comes to around 12k.

I am using sony hx5v with comparative specifications. Not launched yet in india. 10 x , 10.1 MP, GPS with compass. GPS works well in open spaces. Also has back illuminated senosr, given good photos in low light situations. May be better option than panasonic tz10.

For sony hx5v, GPS works better if we update the GPS satellite data to the camera. Whenever i connect the camera to PC, it updates GPS satellite data which works for 1 month. May be similar techniques required for pansonic tz10. go through manual.
